So what other areas close to Vancouver do you guys recommend?
I guess we would like somewhere with a good mix of cultures.. from what was said above Maple Ridge is the least culturally diverse. Plus we need to be in an area with a variety of restaurants.
I've searched MLS and the houses in Maple Ridge look ideal - are there any areas nearer to Vancouver with similar house types and prices?

It might help if you can give some more details on the kind of home you are looking for. Prices vary greatly.

Each place has its plus and minus points. I would not rule any city out before you have a chance to come and see. Surrey, for example, has some areas that I wouldn't touch with a bargepole (even someone else's bargepole) yet is also has some of the most affluent and exclusive addresses in Metro Vancouver. My company is currently working on a 22,000 sf oceanfront home in South Surrey

1) Location
- a place which is multiculturally diverse.
- good restaurants/shopping facilities within driveable vicinity.
- good primary schools.
- would like some greenery;views of mountains/rivers would be a plus.
- acceptable commuting distance from downtown vancouver
- targetting an area that professionals live in.
2) House
- 4 bedrooms
- 2+ bathrooms
- basement
- would like to have a large plot of land
- not too fussed about it being under construction or less than 5 years.
3) Price - absolute max is $700,000

Jonboy ... ok here is my specification on a house:

A search on the mls shows 4 properties in the Lower Mainland that have 4 + beds, 2 + baths and an acreage priced less than $700,000. One is on Barnston Island and three in Aldergrove. I don’t think any of these will meet more than 2 or 3 of the location requirements you have.
There is a trade off between size of lot, size of house and price. Over the years lots have got smaller and houses bigger. A typical suburban house from the 70s would be about 2,000 sf on a 8,000 sf lot. New builds these days tend to be up to 4,000 sf houses (if you finish the basements) but on a 4 - 5,000 sf lot.
Land is very expensive. If you can compromise on number of bedrooms there are a few more properties with extra large city lots available. If you can compromise on lot size there are literally thousands of homes for sale less than $700,000 across the region. With the exception of West Van or Vancouver Westside you are in the market wherever you want to go.

Got that right. Saw her a couple of weeks ago strutting down the Haney By-ass, boobs a-dangling. If I looked like that I'd make sure it was covered.

Try Steveston or somewhere that's near the Sky Train? Fraser Heights is also an excellent place to have a look out - great views of the mountains and good access to just about everywhere. I have to commute downtown frequently for meetings etc and find it takes 10 minutes to King George St and about 35-40 minutes down town. Also check out Langley which also has some very nice areas and good shopping etc.
