I live in Thornbury, on Georgian Bay, the Beaver River runs through town and into the Bay.
I would suggest you plan a visit within the next few weeks as the Salmon are starting their annual migration to spawn, and in town there is a very extensive Fish Ladder where you can see the Salmon jump upstream on their way to the spawning beds.
A few weeks from now the river bed will be full of hundreds of carcass' of rotting fish, a natural stage in this cycle.
Parents, it is most informative for your kids.
B.C's runs are much more spectacular, but a little further away.

I was water skiing on the river through Kamloops over the weekend, and saw several salmon jumping.
Also saw a large bear on the shoreline eating supper and having a drink. Presume it was a tasty Sockeye.
The Adams River (Scotch Creek area on the Shuswap Lake) is a great place in October to watch the spawning.

They've been in the spawning grounds and Fraser River here for at least 3 weeks, maybe more... They're so impressive to watch - especially at Rearguard Falls - but my photos never seem to capture the actual leap
Here's one I took last month of a couple of them at the spawning grounds instead, when they're far easier to photograph.

Adams is SPECTACULAR, you can walk across the river on the backs of the Fish, and those Reds and Greens, phenomenal sight, one only has to see it once to remember.
Thornbury is unique, the federal government spent several million dollars to create this fish ladder, the shape of a stream, it winds up past the dam.
The Town also constructed a very extensive overhanging deck so the Tourists can look down on the Salmon as the congregate prior to the run.
30 pound Fish are not uncommon.
