OMG - yes the first thing which I noticed

That there is no pressure on the children to grow up, they are more relaxed, they go out more, i know that my little one has had some time to adjust and finds it way different to the uk system, maybe worth talking to some or you could nip in with me when i take my little one in

I do find that Canadians have a different way of nurturing their kids than we do in the UK - have seen with my cousins and Rani. There is alot more compassion I feel with children here than in the UK for sure and people who work with kids dont do it for the money they do it for the passion they feel for their field of work.

the pay is $10hr and the girls told me they are fully qualified, but like my other thread i couldnt do it, but if you own your own house you can convert your own basement as a daycare for kids, some have in town and one of the groups we know is real cool, wow id love there basement, not sure my kids would though
Yeah the pay is a bit cr4p for all of the training that these girls go through for sure and like the day care centre we are talking about - these women who work there are absolutely passionate about kids.

I have a feeling that those girls at New World have to obtain the full qualification otherwise they are unable to work and they dont get the $10 ph until they get the full quali they train on I think $8.50pm

Yep...one thing that we are looking at for later is the basement idea, but also been advised that you can foster kids without having PR, but you cant be a childcare adviser unless you get everything in place, strange, but hey thats the rules.
i know that my little one is totally settled, maybe also an idea to look at the kindergarten side, like gaynor said the district 51 would be a good way to go.

i have seen afew places here that would make good day centres also, but you need to look at the cost side of this.....hope that help

Are you removing Red Deer from you list because someone has said it's more of a motorway stop and because someone else has said it is souless?????

IMHO those people don't know what they're talking about. How can you judge a City on the time span of soccor tournaments and on the drive through on the way upto Edmonton????

I'm not going to talk crime stats - you'll have to google that yourself, I no nothing about IT jobs - again search the job sites, www.reddeerjobshop.ca etc There is probably a www.lethbridgejobshop.ca too.

On our 1st reccie we decided to travel down to Med Hat - half way there we wondered why we were going so far in the middle of nowhere and turned around - our choice. We stayed in Lethbridge and have done a few times, a difficult city to navigate as non locals, very windy all the time - never been when there is no wind. Had the job offer been Lethbridge instead of Red Deer, we would have gone there, would we have stayed? Who knows.

The job offer was in Red Deer. Red Deer is smack bang in the middle of the QE Highway from Calgary to Edmonton give or take a few clicks. What does that mean? Two international airports, two major cities within an hour and a half drive. Drumheller is 2 and bit hours away to the east - the Rockies are the same away to the west. Red Deer has loads to offer a vast range of people.

Don't discount places just because someone else said - oooh - drove there once, got lost and only saw RV Dealers.

I know Red Deer tourism has youtube clips - check to see if Lethbridge and Med Hat do to. Only you will know on your reccie what feels right for you.

Totally agree, we love lethbridge, hate some others, but its on our feelings
never been ro red deer but we have put on the list for summer, plus drumheller and edmonton, if your job takes you to drumheller go for it, if your job takes you to calgary, i would say go for it, once PR you can move where you want to, just because one expat loves aplace another one will not.

i have read on other posts that people thought there was no life in lethbridge, that there was no life here, to many native problems etc etc
but that is there view and NOT mine, i love it here, will i stop here forever......who know's

Go and do the road trip, see which one sticks out to YOU and then come back and tell us why, but i would say with your line of work then being near to the larger citys may help, if you are coming in on a WP then that is what you need to look at more at this point

Good Luck - anything else dont be shy please ask.

Thanks, I will look into that. A job offer would be great, but would probably send me into full blown panic mode!

We are taking the bull by the horns and putting the house on the market in Jan. We are expecting it to take ages but if, by some miracle, it sells we will rent. Don't want to get a job offer and then feel pressured to take stupid offers.

Reading your conversation with moondevil about child care, it seems much less pressurized. I have been trying to find out which curriculum they use, but I'm not having much joy.
Here, we have recently switched to the Early Years Foundation Stage, don't get me started on that, the paper trail is unbelievable!
Do you know if and what your setting is using ? I notice that Montessori principles seem to be quite popular.

BTW I have exchanged a couple of e-mails with gibbos1, we were hoping to meet but I think they have got too much going on, not long for them now!

50/50 currently - holding a posting order Aug 09 so rabble up the road in theory, but as I've already seen a 90 day letter for a Feb 07 AOR, and we're AOR Jan 07, there's a fairly good possibility we'll get a 90 day at least (fingers crossed) before we get anywhere near the plane in Aug...

...decided the rabble was the safest option until PR! Jury's out as to whether meds will be in Canada or UK... answers on a postcard...

Steve_P,

I like your suggestion about visiting few cities in Alberta before making my decision on where to settle. I am planning on visiting Alberta next summer (hopefully I will have my PR then). I am definitely going to visit Lethbridge, Red Deer, Medicine Hat and I have also added Calgary and Edmonton on my list (thanks to you).

Piff Poff,

Thanks for your message and thanks for letting me know that Red Deer is not that bad as people have described here. Sounds like Red Deer is situated in a better location (middle of Edmonton and Calgary) then other two cities I was looking at. Anyway, we are going to visit all the cities (5 of them) and we will make our decision where we want to live. I like small city and my wife likes big city. As of now she wants to live in Edmonton or near to Edmonton as she has heard that it has the biggest shopping mall in the world and she is so excited about that. I don't know why women love shopping.

As somebody else said, I need to go where my job takes me and she was absolutely right about that. I cannot just pick a place to live. First I need to find a job and live there where my job is.

Thanks everybody.

Piff...not takin' the P#ss, but you'd be a crackin' rep for the Red Deer tourism board - honest
Sadly, they turned me down as I was just a little too negative

Hey Wantomove! Calgary (or just outside) Is also getting a massive mall more shopping for the misses

Red Deer has two malls - although they are not really anything to write home about lol.
