a) Iain does NOT read EVERYTHING that we Calgarians post b) Iain has NOT visited Calgary during Feb. The city relies on Chinooks to clear the roads, February is likely to have quite a few snow days, If you're going to head to ANY of the ski hills (including COP) you are VERY likely to at the very least be driving on Packed snow if not freshly falling snow. ALL of that said neither a 4x4 NOR winter\snow tires are going to stop you having a 'crash' if you insist on driving like a prat. My advice contact the hire companies and see if ANY are fitting (or have fitted) DECENT All seasons (I use them on my 4x4 :o and have NO problems despite OCCASSIONALLY driving like a complete prat) But Calgarians (and Butch has assimilated very well) like to complain about our lousy (read non-existent) residential snow removal but at the same time don't want to pay any more for snow removal.:sneaky: |

While I agree with most of the above, to state that the city relies on Chinooks to clear the roads is a gross mis-statement. This is true for residential streets but major arteries do actually get cleared and quite well to boot. :p

Sarcee and Glenmore (which I consider arterial roads) can be an absolute joke during Feb and March. Highway 8 also seems to be neglected  I also wouldnt have a problem with paying more for snow removal :p |

The Crowchild at Twelve Mile Coulee, and the wee hill just by McMahon and 16th were continually awful/unattended and most of the down town road were skating rinks for weeks. Chunks of Sarcee and Glenmore were just silly. I thought it was very poor - December especially. But regardless, drive carefully and you should be fine. Edit - my taxes, paid or increased or otherwise wouldn't actually help so I have no right to complain! |

Speaking of highways outside the city I would check very carefully on conditions on the Icefields Parkway before attempting a Banff-Jasper run in February. |

The absence of snow tires on rentals and the false sense of security of 4x4? Yes, that would be true on a trip almost anywhere:sneaky::D

Totally agree about the banff-jasper run though, I'd MAYBE risk it but then i'm a stupid git anyway (and I'm not just here for two weeks) |

And besides, I never seem to get any karma when in "helpful" moderator mode:p |

You just think you do?;):) Mostly, the road clearing I have witnessed in my pathetic two winter experience ( ;) )has been generally good. But for some reason, last December, the city's policies failed miserably. And we didn't have any chinooks so that policy didn't work either  |
