Where do I buy a stamp for a letter, how do I know how much it will cost, where do I post it.

Told you it was silly, but I havent seen anything that looks like a post office or a post box. :o

Sit back and waits for the comic replies I know will come

Canada post (either the website or visiting a post office) will provide all your answers.

Yeah, really helpful response.

To the OP, Canada Post has "post offices" all over the place. You'll just need to find your nearest. Some supermarkets have them too- my nearest Sobeys has a fully functioning Canada Post "office".

Re: Really silly question - here I go...

Web site tells me how much it costs doesnt tell me where I can find a place to buy them or where I can post them.

Shopper's Drug Mart stores often include a post office.

Canada Post is inside Sobeys here and we have one inside 'The Brick' building. :)

Canada Post find a post office: http://www.canadapost.ca/cpotools/ap...execution=e2s1

Re: Really silly question - here I go...

Canada Post website (in the personal bit) has a tab that says "FIND A POST OFFICE"

In addition, many convenience stores, greeting card shops, plus shoppers drug mart will sell you books of stamps, just like in the UK.

Also, if you are lucky enough to still have a real door to door mail service in your area you can just do what we do, leave the outgoing mail in the mailbox with some change in a baggy, and have the mail man take care of the rest (change and reciept left the next day) Ill miss that when we inevitably get switched to a communal central box:(

mandymoochops Jun 3rd 2009 4:17 am

Re: Really silly question - here I go...

Yup agree with all the above - the stores that have a po inside will have the logo on the door or window somewhere.

Take in your letter, buy a stamp and then give them your letter to post!

Not as stupid a question as you may think - out here in the sticks we have the mail boxes at the end of the drive that the postie delivers twice a week to and puts the red flag up to show we have mail. In the same vein if we want to post something we leave it in the mailbox and said postie will take it when he/she delivers the mail

Also of you want to post larger things within Canada think about sending them by Greyhound - way cheaper and Greyhound have outlets in loads of stores etc

In addition to what Iain has said, we have a communal mailbox about 50 yards from our house and it has a built-in post box where you can drop letters and small parcels into for collection by the mail man.

Note: Do not get the relatives to send chocolate to you in the Summer as the mail box is metal and gets heated to temperatures that cause said chocolate parcel to turn into a runny goo. We still eat it though!

I've found that stamps are available in many corner stores, grocery shops, gas stations etc. Can't recall the last time I used a post office to buy them.

We also have a communal post delivery box about 50 yards away. I expect I could drop letters into that for posting. I will check it out later.

There is an outgoing mail slot at the top of the box.

Thanks jericho for your responce to this reply.

srah - I presume that you once were new to this country, may be it was a while ago and you have forgotten some of the little frustrations that really get to you when you are new.

I am 55 years of age, I used to be a department head in the UK magageing 43 people. For me to have to ask a silly question like "where do I post a letter" is a big thing for me. To have a responce like the one you gave me, was not at all helpful. I had googled Canada Post before posting.

Can I suggest that in future if you cannot add anything of value then dont add anything, that ends up making people feel silly - take the time to consider
A: How you responce comes off the page
B: How it make the reciever feel.
C: How it reflects on you.

I can sympathize here. I recall standing in front of a blue mailbox on a street corner in New Orleans, just a few days after arriving in the US for the very first time. It took me ages to figure out that there wasn't a slot for the mail, but that you had to pull a flap up to deposit your postcard.

Not for the last time, I felt like a right idiot. ;)

Sorry but you did say you had a silly question to ask...:D

FYI...this is an open forum and so one is likely to get all sorts of replies.

I was being helpful..if you had of asked the question to google or similar then you would have had your answer.

I have been a stranger in many countries and am very fortunate to have the aid of the www to find my way around.

You might find this helpful..... http://uk.ask.com/?o=312&l=dir

Good luck.

Did you manage to post the letter though? And did you put a return address on it?

If it makes you feel any better, many years in Vienna ago I posted all my vacation postcards in what later turned out to be a litter bin.

Yes I posted the letter thanks. It was a pre addressed thing to Fido for my mobile bill, so I had to put my details on the back.

Your Vienna story made me laugh.

Sadly I dont expect it to last forever. My boss had a communal box foisted upon his neighbourhood, I expect another restructuring or two and it will be our turn in the name of efficiency*

We have a mailbox at the end of the drive and it usually contains a billet doux from Canada Post complaining about something. "Inadequate snow clearance", "pot holes to be filled. Next inspection Wednesday fortnight". My this postman loves love to whine, we heard nothing from the previous incumbent.

We take care of him, he takes care of us. After a winter of vicous ploughing we did once have to fix the box (really a row of three boxes) so that it was no longer leaning back from the road at 45°, but that seemed like common sense to me anyway... Besides, doing tasks around the house armed with a chainsaw is always fun, right?

Indeed. I have a chainsaw in the Beetle right now, in case of seeing something sawable on the way home.

Your Beetle certainly seems to lead an alternative lifestyle. (probably at least as alternative as the typical Beetle owners lifestyle anyway) You might well be the first person to ever carry a chainsaw in a beetle convertible?

Hope you have it on some newspaper or something....that chain oil doesnt stay nicely in its little tank....you wouldnt want to stain the upholstery:unsure:

It's in a garbage bag on to of the dog blanket (a furry paw printed thing) but, tbh, the upholstery is pretty much shot anyway. It's leather and the pipeing has peeled so it now looks as if it's deliberately white in contrast to the general black colour. The frame of the passenger has broken on one side and the back leans a bit. The driver's seat has sagged in the middle and really needs a cushion, only then you wouldn't feel the heater in the seat and you need that as the engine driven heater has packed up.
