It's well worth a visit in December too.

They put on Scrooge in the barn (my fiance was in it one year!) and have sleigh rides and hot chocolate outside, it's so festive and lovely!

I think you're pulling my plonker here. I have the idea that you're very much a suburban person. Still, maybe not. Do you rope steers from a horse and, if so, why? Why not round them up on a four wheeler?

Suburban by (current) address. Country by heritage.
rounding up is of course different to cutting. Again cutting is ranchwork which is much easier to do from a horse than either on foot or fourwheeler.

Did you grow up in cattle country? Here we know very many cattle farmers but only one who manages his herd from a horse.

Yep I grew up around cattle\sheep farming country (albeit Northern England)
and yes I agree there are more 'advanced societies' than alberta where people do not manage their herds\flocks fron the back of a horse.

And if by tanked off you mean the horse bolting? NOT a chance. One of my friends rides regularly all around Kananaskis and is convinced the same bear strolls along with them (ok not right along aside but well within viewing distance) when they do a particular trail. The horses just ignore it!
That sounds ok then, best take my camera too.

I get blank looks when I talk about hard feed, rising trot (its posting trot here) and riding in the school (its arena here).
I know, I follow the FHotD blog (http://fuglyhorseoftheday.blogspot.com/) and I need a dictionary for a lot of it. When I first started reading it I didn't have a clue what they were on about - posting on a grullo? WTF? [grin]

I love the terminology too! went on a trail ride last week with a friend and i rode her horse which she had an English saddle for!

Love the way a girth is a sinch (sp*) and one does not canter - one lopes!!!!

That said we had an awesome time, and I am taking my daughter out on a trail ride when she comes over next month - can't wait
