Default R.a.f Electrian

GFDGDF

Hello,

I wonder if anyone can give us some advise

I have dual citizenship as my granddad was born in Canada when my son was born i did the same for him we are originally from Plymouth. I sponsored my husband in to Canada we we are going to stay with my parents who live in Calgary,

My husband has been in the air force as a electron for 9 years plus in his spare time he has been furthering him self at college and has done very well for him self i think he said he is 1 away from a degree if he carried on so he is going to finish in Calgary go to sait.

The problem we are having is my husband has applied for around 20+ jobs as desperate canada are for trades people they don't seem to be interested in my husband and his huge amount of experience. we are putting it down to when we are leaving which is April 2006 for my husband as he needs to finish his contract with the forces. me and my son are leaving beginning of march 2006 then my husband can sell all the house hold items.

I thought and everyone else friends in Calgary thought they would bite his hand over. we are not even getting a letter/email to say we will keep you resume on file thank you for applying.

Can anyone help we have updated cover letter and resume to a Canadian standard.

Hi

Trades are heavily regulated, I work in Canada as a Controls technician and want to get my Electrical trade recognised.
I am experienced at my job, but the Electrical trade is vastly different from England to Canada and any English Electrician would need a period of time to gain experience in the differences of materials, terminology and methods- luckily Electrical priniples are the same worldwide!
A skilled tradesman is classed as a Journeyman, if you are not this then you are an apprentice (no matter what age) or a helper (although this is being phased out).
Your husbands best bet is to job hunt when he is out there- face to face and networking is far better than job hunting from a distance.
He could maybe work as an apprentice until he is eligible to challenge the Interprovincial Electrician Exam?
It is frustrating and there is a skill shortage, the difference is Canada is not lowering its standards and your husband and I have to ride the storm until we get the experience to enable us to sit and pass the exam.

Hello,
Thank you for taking time to write and helps us.

My husband has had a date for the exam he is going to challenge it he bought the huge book for sait the exam is multiple choice anyway like he said he should know the ins and outs of his job doing it for 9 years and all over the world in the forces and if he doesn't he should n't be in the job!

He is classed as a journey man he went and saw Harley Sanderson.

I think if my husband has to be a apprentice he will be so disheartened so i am hoping that doesn't happen.

Thank you
Nicola x

I'm assuming your Husband is an RAF Aircraft electrician? Is he applying to the airlines or aircraft industry? You will probably find a reluctance for any employer to contact him until he has actually landed. The only time they will contact him is if they have a job for which they are willing to complete HRDC approval.
It will probably be a case of moving to calgary, take any job and continue the job hunting in person.
They want you to have all the qualifications and experience, but are unwilling to take a chance on new immigrants....
Anyway, I know of a couple of ex-RAF people who have moved to Calgary and both have secured jobs within the aircraft industry. Good Luck!

How much vehicle electrics experience has your husband had? I don't suppose there is much call for house electrics in the RAF...and if you come over here he will probably have to sit the Electrical code exam to get anywhere...most people fail...and the best option will be to do the courses offered by SAIT, and by the time you arrive I think the next one will be in August/Sept.

This said employment as an residential or commercial electrician will be quite hard to find...before anyone replies, that there is tons of work....for a decent wage. He may have to start as a first or second year apprentice until he can gain journeyman status.

If yo PM me, I'll give you details of the firm I work for and if the first opening line applies, he can send his Resume in...I'll give you contact details etc...but i can't promise anything as it is up to them to reply. But what I can tell you is we have over two years + worth of new orders, its Mon - Fri, and the pay is Good, the working environment is similar to what he will be used to and we need Good reliable, honest, hardworking individuals.

As I said if this is what you are looking for PM me and I'll give you more info.

From time to time my husband does miner e which is house hold items like for the people who are single on camp in there rooms.

My husband does have quite alot of vehicle electrics he doesn't just specialise in one electrical area i think thats why the r.a.f if a good stepping stone because they are trained to the ying yang otherwise there use less when there in a war situation.

My email address is [email protected]
also all my husband details are on monster.com

Thank you for taking the time to write to us

Hi

There are two trades recognised, Construction Elec. and Industrial Elec.

Your husband should aim for 'Industrial' if he wants to be in Maintenance. I sit my exam in January, this I am told by an apprentice branch advisor is an 'easier exam to pass' for the likes of us as the questions contain less Canadian code questions and more generalized theory, ie. controls and automation theory which is similar worldwide.

Also, some advice regarding the possibility of having to spend the first few years in Canada as an apprentice. Yes it will be disheartening but:

The culture here is that you dont neccessarily need to be a school leaver to qualify, older apprentices are as common so you would not be out of place.
The trade is very different, a lot of things will be totally alien to you, Examples would be the selection of cables, the hideous wire nuts (marettes)! the different code, different voltages etc. etc. If you were hired as a Journeyman immediately, you would be putting a lot of pressure on yourself to hold down the job- and you will be having to ask the sort of questions to your peers that an apprentice would be asking anyway.

Regards

Darren
