Default Questions re renting apartments/condos in Calgary

Hi all,

We're planning on moving out to Calgary in May/June this year. We have decided to rent an apartment initially, and have read the Wiki article and looked at some of the rental websites suggested.

However, we have a couple of questions:

After deciding on a property, roughly how long does it take to pick up the keys? (- and is this different if renting through a property company, rather than a private landlord).

Other than the monthly rent, security deposit and additional utilities, what other charges are due? (- for example, is there a fee payable to the rental agent to set up the agreement? If so, how much is typical?).

Many apartments have 'storage lockers' in the parking garage. What size is typical for these? (-are they 'broom cupboard' size, or larger?)

Thanks for any replies!

I'm not knowledgeable about the Calgary market but don't imagine it's much different that anywhere else in the country.
The keys would be available to you immediately, if the unit was unoccupied or possibly at the first of the month after becoming vacant. It shouldn't matter whether your renting privately or with property company.
Any rental agent fee should be paid by whoever hires the agent.
There should be no other payments other than those you've described.
Storage locker sizes vary, of course. In an apartment building I'm familiar with the locker measures 5'w x 10'L x 8'H so holds a good deal of stuff if packed properly. You could, if necessary, rent an outside storage unit.

Brianscottie43 - thanks for the info. It would appear that, if the storage locker you have seen is typical, then they are much larger than we imagined!

Sam-in-Okotoks - we received your email and we are looking through your website as we type this! Thanks for that.

Thanks,
