Question on Ages

Hi All,

I am just curious as to the age of everyone on here. In the grand scheme of things I think we are quite young 27 and 28 but I would be interested to know at what point in everyone's life they have decided to take the plunge and up sticks?

thanks

bib

See this thread...

There's very little which hasn't been asked before.

thanks for that, the reason i ask is firstly it was from 2006 (ie old system) the length of time put a lot of people off.

There have been many "systems" over the years.

I don't think it has affected the numbers or ages in any major way.

Why, do old people get put off by timelines? Wouldn't have thought so - but then again thats always the excuse when someone else points out a question has been asked before "well its an old thread so the replies don't count"

It's a fair question though. There is a different cohort on the forum from the one in 2006 and the economic situation is also different. This latter may have an effect on which demographics are emigrating.

I seriously don't think that timescales will affect the result - it would however be interesting to find out if peoples first thought of moving to Canada was because they intially believed it to be waaay cheaper than the UK, with bigger cheaper houses and therefore being able to move over and live the life of Riley!!

For sure thats what me and the ex first thought (prior to doing research that is :) )

I'm guessing that up till around 2007 those coming would be selling houses in the UK to fund their new life abroad. People who maybe bought houses prior to 2000; probably mostly in their late 30's or ealry 40's.

I will now go and check that thread to see if I'm right ;)

I think 28 is a bit late to do this as it'll be difficult to start again at that age. I would consider your financial situation carefully and there is quite a lot age discrimination here.

Oink,
I'm obviously totally over the hill, then:ohmy:
I'm 38, OH 43, kids 7 and 9. Perfect timing as far as we are concerned. Any earlier and I wouldn't have had my parents to help out with the kids in the early years. Any later and the kids would be in secondary and would be much harder for them to make the move.
We are far more financially settled now, have major life experience behind us and a level head...none of which I had 10 years ago.

Fair enough but its going to be harder to recover the money you'll lose with the move. I suppose if you are going to take early retirement, which I assume given your wish to move to White Rock that’s your plan, then I'm sure it'll be fine. But unless you are going to transfer within an existing company, the hit you'll take with seniority and the loss of pension credit doesn't seem worth it to me. I doubt at your ages, you'll be able to recover, that's all.

How?
Salary potential much more now than 10 years ago.
We are both full time (was part time when kids were young)
Mortgage is relatively less than 10 years ago. Seemed massive back then, now OK.
Childcare now costs much less now as they are both at school.
Have much more in the way of investments now.

For us, we are happy to start all over if it doesn't work out.

I agree, especially when one considers pensions.

don't rely on the government to fund your retirment, look after yourself first. If the gubmint chips in then so be it.

I am 34 at the moment and I would like to move once Devil Boy has qualified to become a ranger.

I've been 28 for quite some time & see no reason why I wouldn't still be once I have PR;)

the passport might show +10 by then

Honestly, you can be young one minute then you're not anymore, so don't worry about being too young in your late twenties. I think I was 30 when I thought about moving to the USA with the ex. Luckily, life and business got in the way and we got divorced instead.

I'm 40 now and I've been seriously planning to move for the last 2 years. It took an age to decide where to go and we were leaning towards Australia at first because second husband didn't think he'd like Canada. We hope to go this year and I will be 41. I'd rather be going in my late twenties but apparently they're not ageist in Canada.

Re: Question on Ages

We moved when we were 35 and the kids were 3.5.

How do you figure that 28 is too late to start again?

I must admit that I've not seen any ageism - in fact quite the opposite.

Cheers - Steve

An aging wreck writes:

Surely it's not chronological age that matters but commitments. It would not have entered my head to emigrate while my children (estranged but still in regular contact through the medium of their Amex bills) were in school. Now that they're not it would again be reasonable for me to consider shuffling off somewhere else. A single person of whatever age may as well go for it, someone who has a family to think of, especially someone who has children of high school age, wants to have a good think and, if going, wants to have, at least, a job sorted.

Wow, I guessed you were young from your picture but I didn't guess that young. What visa are you going over there on if you don't mind me asking?
