The explanation is quite a good one: it seems that a farmer/landowner was visiting family in Toronto ON when he received a telegram informing him that a rich vein of coal had been discovered under one of his fields. On his return he decided to name the colliery Toronto as well as the village which he built nearby to house the miners and their families.

I found out last month that there is also a Toronto in County Durham, near Bishop Aukland.
