Proper Chocolate in Calgary
#1
Hi All
I wasn't sure where to post this question, I did consider the Maple Leaf but I believe it's important enough to warrant going on to the main forum.
Right - I'm a self confessed Chocolate Monster (aka Chocoholic) and want to know if (and where) I can get decent chocolate in Calgary. When I say decent I mean something like Thorntons, Lindt, Green and Blacks - not Cadbury's or Galaxy, I don't care much for chocolate flavored candy I am after the good stuff. Dark, Milk, White chocolate - it's all good.
Now, I know there is a really posh shop in Calgary that sells proper chocolate. I can't remember the name of the shop I didn't buy anything as you needed to take out a mortgage to buy any. So, what I'm after is chocolate I can affordably buy and enjoy on a regular basis.
Am I asking for the moon on a stick here or does such a thing exist?
Yours Hopefully

Odd as it sounds Green and Black is available in most Health Food stores in Calgary

Green and Blacks is on sale in Zehr's here, which is Superstore - you could try there. They had various flavours at my local one including ginger. It's in the "Organic" section, not the chocolate section though... They also stock several types of Lindt as well, probably do in Calgary too.
Now if you can find me a Valrhona stockist around here in return, I'll be truly happy

I've never heard of Valrhona, is that a brand you used to buy the UK?

Valrhona is a French chocolate manufacturer based in the small town of Tain L'Hermitage in Hermitage. They focus on very high quality luxury chocolate, kind of like zotter from Austria. I would not expect that type of chocolate to be found in any other store than a specialist one. It is considered to be probably one of the best chocolates out there for a reasonable price, even though I as Austrian have to vote for Zotter of course.

I forgot to say that Superstore/Zehrs/Loblaw does their own brand of G & B knock off, usually on the shelf next to it. I didn't compare the ingredients exactly but both G & B and the knock-off said "Made in Italy" so it's probably made in the same factory. The Superstore brand was a dollar or so cheaper iirc.

I happened to be helping out at school when one of the parents dropped off a Chocolate Yule Log for the teachers as a Christmas treat & OMG
it looked fabulous. Didn't have any but mouthwatering to look at. You're right though, it is super expensive although they do sell small bars for the occasional treat. Purdy's is another store that is probably on par with Thorntons and more affordable than Bernard Calleaut.
Enjoy!

I had a look at their best sellers list and 'English Toffee' was on there - it didn't look like any toffee I'd ever seen - http://www.purdys.com/dept.asp?depti...=0&PriceCat=1& sounded nice though.
