Even when we went to a Michelin starred restaurant and had a 7 course menu for our 10th wedding anniversary, with bubbly to start with and wine, the bill was only £65! So £52 must have been somewhere a lot smarter than where I'd normally eat.

We can eat three courses at most of our local gastropubs for much less than that, or if we're on a tighter budget then we'll do one of the chain restaurants such as Bella Italia or Cafe Rouge, where you can always find a voucher on the internet for a 2 for 1 or similar. Those are the type of restaurants we tend to go to with the children, and the four of us will usually eat 3 courses and drinks for approx £40.

HTH. Can't help you on the natural gas I'm afraid, as we're not on mains gas (or mains water or mains sewage, sigh!), so don't have any figures for that.

Ignoring the 2-for-1 vouchers that you can often find for the chains in the UK, I find eating out in Canada cheaper. For our wedding anniversary, Husband and I went to Milestones, each had a main and shared a large dessert, and had a bottle of wine. The bill after tax and tip was $85. We thought that was pretty reasonable. Wednesday night no one felt like cooking so we ordered Swiss Chalet, dinner for 4 adults came to $43. (No drinks, no tip, since we did pick-up, but add drinks and tip and that would have been maybe $60.) So I find it broadly similar or perhaps a bit cheaper. I remember going to Pizza Express for lunch with a voucher, two pizzas at maybe £10 each - assuming BOGOF so £10 for two, then 2 drinks usually at £2.50 each, plus tip would be maybe a total bill of £18 or so including tip... which converts to $33. So not much in it.

It was this place: http://www.bellaitalia.co.uk some chain that I've never been to before. And it was £52 exactly, what a memory. I don't remember leaving a huge tip and we only had one alcoholic drink each.

What are you living in?

Just got latest bill from Guelph Hydro. It's for 59 days from March 17 to May 15.

Some of it is billed as Winter and some as Summer. Not sure when the Summer portion started but it looks like it was only a few days.

Used $30.52 worth of electricity.
Once they tack on $42.25 for delivery (ffs), $2.48 regulatory charges and $2.41 debt retirement it's $77.67
+HST $10.09
Total $87.76

-10% Ontario Clean Energy Benefit $8.76
Amount due $79.00

So $1.33 per day. Or put another way...barely as expensive as a small coffee at McDonalds. Literally giving it away and most of the bill isn't even electricity.

I make it about 250w running at any given moment. Seems about right.

A little bit more than here, we don't seem to have a peak rate, it's just a flat rate. For my house anyway.

They like flat rates in AB it seems.

Besides Ontario, anyone one else in other provinces paying a delivery fee for electric service?

We appear to not have that it BC, just a basic per day charge, which for me is only like 5 bucks a month.

Seems excessive to be charging 42 dollars for delivery.

I guess everyone who whines about high rates in BC needs to see what other places are paying after all the extra fees are added.

You went to Bella Italia and didn't use a voucher code?! Tsk Steve, I have much to teach you if you're to become a full miser.

Stick this site in your bookmarks and use it next time you're in the UK - http://www.vouchercodes.co.uk/bellaitalia.co.uk

We rarely eat out without using a voucher, so they're a pretty essential part of my calculations. :D

Haha fair enough! We were the same in the UK, about 80% of the time used a voucher.

I did my comparison to Pizza Express using a voucher and it came up similar, so without a voucher it would be even more expensive. :)

I used this site for vouchers: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/dea...staurant-deals

Ours shows a $20 a month service charge (like the UK's "standing charge").

Is that what people are calling a delivery fee?

Sounds like different regions calling it a different name, we do have a basic charge, so even if you use 0 per month in hydro, you will still get a bill, but I was surprised at how high some of these charges are in other regions.

This is my most current bill, and the basic charge for 32 days is 5.32, so seeing people pay 20, 40+ for it, seems crazy high if its a monthly charge.

BC Hydro

Whatever you pay for electricity, it is FAR less per KWh than it was in the UK.

We seem to hit the Step 2 threshold a few days before each billing date, but if you look a the the usage for 'similar homes nearby', they use about 40KWh per day, or twice what we do.

Blown air gas heating uses a fair bit of electricity, as does aircon. So you don't win, winter or summer!

wow 40 kwh would give me a heart attack...lol

We are below average according to BC Hydro for our housing type, in the past year we used 3,165 KWh so breaks down to 8.67 per day, which is about right based on what they report daily.

I was surprised how much less we used once we stopped using the stove stop and oven, and went with a toaster oven and electric skillet and crock pot for cooking.

The agency who runs the apartment building also replaced all the CFL bulbs with LED's, changed out the bathroom light fixture that had 6 bulbs with one that just has 1 bulb.

Water heater is the biggest electric hog, but nothing I can do there other then shorter showers.
