Default Pregnancy, birth and work permits

Hi all,

I got a three year intra-company transfer visa in December. My husband jumped on the back of it with open work permit.

I have just found out I am pregnant. I will go on maternity leave in October and plan to take the full year of leave.
I have 2 questions:
1) Is taking a year of maternity leave acceptable under the conditions of my work permit?
2) What happens if I don't want to return to work after the year of maternity leave? Does having a child in Canada permit me and my husband to stay in the country?

I would appreciate your thoughts/experience.

Thank you in advance
Anna

1. Yes
2. No. You can remain to the end of your work permit, the child is a citizen s/he can come and go as s/he pleases, you still have to qualify for Immigration.

Thanks for the speedy reply PMM.
-Can we apply from within the country or would we have to leave first?
-What status would we be applying for?
-Would having a child with Canadian citizenship help our application?
-How much does the application cost?

Thank you
Anna

You can apply from within the country
You would be applying for permanent resident status
no it wouldn't
Can't recall offhand but a look on the CIC website should tell you.

You need to find out which route you are going to apply via, and whether you qualify.
