My sister (in Northern Ontario) recently applied to renew her PR card and some time afterward received a letter stating it was ready and she was one of the lucky few "selected" to pick up her card in person...in Toronto. She pointed out that she lived nearly 1000 miles away & that it was hardly convenient just to jump on a plane to do this. The card was mailed out. You have to love government bureaucracy!

Can someone point me in the right direction? I recently got married and have changed my last name on my passport and now want to do the same with my PR card so they match. All the links I see are to get the initial PR card, renew if expired or report lost or stolen. Which form do i need if i simply need a name change? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

As far as I know you need to apply for a new PR Card and wait however many months it will take CIC to process it. Renewal is the category that fits closest. Fortunately the form says you can hold on to your existing PR Card as it may take them months to process the application for a new one.

Are you sure that you really want to change your name, at least for official purposes?

Here is what others in your situation have done: You have to take the current wait time for PR card into account. How far away are you from being eligible for Canadian Citizenship? If you call the citizenship help line and asked if it was ok if your PR card name didn't match the name your applying for citizenship with due to a recent name change... they will tell you that was fine and that there is a place on the citizenship form to indicate name change. You then have to include the name change documentation in the application.

Thanks for the responses. I cannot apply for citizenship for a few years so that option is out of the question. I didnt think it would take that long to get a new card so decided to change my name on my passport first as I was told this would have to be done then my PR card so everything matches. I will apply for renewal as that best describes what i need. I am due to travel in Feb, if my new card isnt here yet do you think i can travel with my new passport and old PR card as long as I have my marriage cert with me and proof of postage to get a new card?

Theres no rush, I got married in May and wanted to take my husbands name so changed it on bills, at the bank, OHIP card etc. I thought if i got my passport and PR done that would be the end of all the paperwork and i wouldnt have to think of it again. Renewing my UK passport took 3 weeks from app being sent to new passport arriving, I didnt think ( and now wish i had looked into it) that getting a new PR card would take months

$50 and 91 calendar days for a renewal PR card, or unless you are talking about re-applying for PR status, which is $550. 00 per adult and $150.00 per child and $490 RPRF for adults. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/informa...es/perm-ec.asp

At what point do you apply for the renewal? In your last year? Or in the final months?

Just wondered if anyone had any answers to this question? My Card expires in September but my new job (starting in January) will include lots of travel, so I'd like to put my application in as soon as possible

As the processing time is about 90 days, apply now if you wish.

Havent read all the replies but just out of curiosity why would you want to renew your PR card if you could get a Canadian passport once it expires? PR cards are valid for 5 years and if you have lived in Canada for 730 days out of 5 years then you are eligible to apply for citizenship arent you. Unless, someone wants to live in Canada just as a PR and having to keep renewing their PR status obviously?

Citizenship applications can take two years these days. So even if you haven't left the country and apply ASAP there's no guarantee you'll have a Canadian passport before the card expires, and if you've been away a few months there's a very good chance you won't.

Then add the three month wait for a PR card if you don't get the passport, and there's a very good reason to renew at least once. In fact, last time I flew back to Canada with only a few months left on my PR card the immigration guy told me I should get a new one just in case.
