I take tripadvisor with a pinch of salt really very few people will ever bother to review a hotel if they only have good things to say about it and also the website tends to be 80% whining Americans who expect 4* treatment for only $50 per night.

Not that that's a problem if one limits oneself to literal eating and drinking but "Naked Night" at the Barn might not be everyone's cup of latte and any night at Zippers is no one's.

On edit: beaten by I2C (again).

Wow, are you guys telling me that Toronto has an even louder gay vibe than Manchester or Blackpool? Because I honestly didn't think that was possible. :)

I don't do the north but Toronto's queerer than Brighton.

I don't think anyone can mistake a club full of writhing, arseless-chaps-clad bodies as a neutral place for a nice bite to eat. I still maintain that it has some of the nicest places for grub in the vicinity.

I've no idea how loudly gay other places are, I just thought I'd mention it as some people are weird about going to places that well known rainbow areas.

Yep, that is pretty hardcore.

Not that that's a bad thing though and as I said, living near Canal Street means that you tend to accept that sort of thing as normal anyway. I frequently see drag queens making their way home after a night out complete with a 5 o'clock shadow and bag of store bought sandwiches if I pop out to our corner shop for a newspaper on a Sunday morning.

Is it wrong that I really want to go there now based upon that review?

Not at all wrong. Networking is key in Canada so whichever means you choose to deploy, be it arseless chaps or a frock and makeup, then so be it.

I was thinking more for an entertaining night out, I hadn't actually thought about the networking part of it, not that I would have any objection to that but my GF might find it a bit strange.

More likely to get the best out of Church St when out with the locals. Neighbours of ours did drag at Tango & Cruise, always a blast when the missus and I went out with them.

However, if I had to put visiting family and friends in TO, it wouldn't be east of Yonge.

How come? Don't you want them to enjoy Toronto?

How very odd! No Church Street, no St Lawrence Market, no boardwalk, no Danforth, no Allen Gardens greenhouse?

I suppose if family and friends wish to see the 'real' Toronto, they could stay west and wander through Parkdale or the projects around Chinatown.

TBH I don't really get this east/west fixation people have about Toronto. The west offers much the same as the east, less alcohol of course because the west was "dry" in my memory and it's taken a while to get established, but, if posing is your thing, Queen West-west offers as many opportunities as Queen East. High Park offers much the same as Riverdale Park, albeit with a commute. I could visit the west if pushed to do so, dullness isn't the worst feature a neighbourhood could have.

Oh I'm sure my mum would love it to be honest, she always makes her excuses for passing through the gay village everytime she comes to visit me in Manchester. :)

We haven't booked flights yet and where we land depends on where we manage to find the cheapest flight to. The only disadvantage of Toronto I know about is the queue that I've heard about on another 'landing' thread.

Sending you a PM...

Thank you to everyone for the contributions. I have looked at some of the hotels mentioned and joined a forum called biddingForTravel.com, where I can bid on flights/hotels/car rental.

Thanks to Clematis for the pm, I'll let you know the dates as soon as I have them.
