Does anybody know what happens to points on driving license when you convert the UK one to a Canadian one?

I dont think you actually convert these days..I think that you have to sit a Canadian test, and after you pass you get given a "New" driving license. Best bet is to track down the motoring body for the province you wish to settle in.

Hi Frankie
Thanks for your reply but I'm now totally confused. I was told by the CIC London a few months ago that Ontario was swapping the Driving license and that some other provinces would follow soon too. Since then I thought I saw a few thread about the swap???

Oh..Canada, Why can't every province have the same rules and regulations...I'm off to Alberta, and their rules seem to be that I can drive on my UK license for a period of three months or so, but require a test after this period...Ontario could be different, don't know.

Stuck on a bicycle for 10 years!!! I'll have to get very fit as everything is so far apart. It might take me all that time to get to see you in Alberta if I have to cycle there

I just exchanged my UK one for an Ontario one at the weekend (although we're not headed there, we just wanted to avoid tests!). We took the paper counterpart bits (I'm assuming that's where your points are?) and the clerks at the driving centre were not interested in them one little bit. Ours were clean though. The reception lady checked that we had them, Mr B's was really scrappy and falling to pieces, but when we handed them over at the main counter they were handed straight back without even being unfolded. You may well have no problems at all therefore.
BEst of luck!

Hi Biiiink,
Curious how you managed to get a swap for Ontario, did you not have to show a resident address to get the licence ? Did you do it during a holiday or stopover ? Could you do it before having PR status ?
Sorry for all the questions !
Are you saying that say someone was headed for BC, but stopped over in Toronto for a few days, got the UK licence swapped for an Ontario one, then after a few weeks, swapped the Ontario one for a BC one this would work out easily enough without any extra hassles ?
If that is the case, might be worth a Toronto stopover later this year LOL.
Cheers,
Rich.

Hi Rich,
I'm a citizen, Mr B landed as a PR in Toronto on Friday and we both swapped our UK licenses on Saturday morning. We gave the hotel address but were a bit surprised that we didn't get the plastic photo card license on the spot, despite them taking your photo, just a "temporary permit" to use until they mailed our licenses out to us in a week or so. The temporary is as good for driving as a plastic license card but expires 3mths hence.
We've spoken to the hotel who will gladly "hold" the license for us until our Toronto stopover in May. Of course that's not foolproof, they may slip up and return them to sender but we'll play daft and say we never received the licenses when the temporaries finally expire and can we have replacements sent out again please.
So, it's perfectly do-able but a good idea to have an Ontario address where you can reliably receive mail for a week or two after swapping.
Also, Manitoba's laws state that to trade in (our Ontario) ones from another province, they must have been valid in that jurisdiction for 3mths or longer... so in our case it'll work out timewise but it might be a consideration for you if BC is the same.
I'll let you know if the hotel comes through - perhaps you could stay there too if it all works out for us?!
Best,
Biiiiink
