Pls Help Calgary - Edmonton
#31
I've enjoyed living in both towns actually.
Lived in Edmonton for 6 years and Calgary 10 years.
Having a motorbike I love Calgary for its access to twistie mountain roads.
If you like canoeing or motorboats Edmonton has more lakes.
Hunting either city.
Skiiing, hiking, rock climbing Calgary.
Camping - either city.
Night life - I don't have night life, I have kids!!!
Kid friendly - Calgary has lake communities. I live in Midnapore which has a gated (and so safe) community lake. Fishing and beach life suring the summer - they stock it with 10,000 rainbow trout each spring. There's ospreys that fish in the lake! (I remember travelling to Aviemore to try and see the only breeding pair in the UK.) In winter the lake is frozen and there's an outdoor rink with a big fire pit in the middle. Lots of kids congregate there. You can skate or play hockey on the lake and you can also ice-fish for the trout. You can also toboggan down the hill. Plus all the trees are lit up in winter, and in spring it's surrounded by lilac bushes.
I didn't have kids in Edmonton so have no idea.
Zoo - Calgary
Museums - both cities.
World famous dinosaur museum - Drumheller!

When I visited Edmonton it seemed less "blue collar" than a typical industrial city in the UK. That might be because most UK blue collar cities have been on the decline for at least a generation and have large areas of dereliction and population unemployed/on benefits.
Someone I know in the UK who used to live in Edmonton and Calgary told me that Edmonton is more of a "cultural" centre in terms of being headquarters for various Alberta institutions/organisations. The other indicator he mentioned was that the main university in Edmonton was established about 100 years ago whereas the equivalent in Calgary is much more recent. He said this didn't mean there was anything wrong with Calgary just that it had expanded from its "cowboy/ranching" origins more recently.

Oh, and Calgary has the Stampede - the greatest outdoor show on earth, and Edmonton has something called Klondike Days, whatever that is

Hi Lisa
Shopping is a big plus for me even though Calgary has great shops, I see Edmonton has more to offer.
What I am looking for is a nice place to live, where I can travel to the shops, markets, flicks, gym, theatre, dining and night outs.
Im not asking for much am I .lol

Ooh tough decision!
WE liked both, Edmonton is the Capital and doesn't have the views of the Rockies like Calgary, but we visited both and like both...also if you are into shopping Edmonton has a massive mall!
Depends on what you are looking for, the kind of lifestyle you want?

I have to agree about the Mall, it's huge! surely is a shoppers dream, and great fun for the kids too.
As I live just outside Birmingham, and anyone reading this post will certainly relate to the difference in shopping experience if you've been to Edmonton Mall and compare it to B'ham's "Merryhill complex" or Merryhell as it's called locally!
Comparing L/Spa to Calgary - again just my opinion, I thought was an insult to Calgary. Larger scale town or not!
As already mentioned by posters, in brief, Calgary for mountains, skiing, & cosmopolitan lifestyle..
Edmonton for similar things, and the Mall is a must!

One thing I do notice slightly is the atmosphere.
Edmonton is noticably lower than Calgary. Both cities are noticably dryer than the UK and water drinking is a must, however my face starts drying up badly in Calgary unless I moisturize ( how manly!!) while I can get away without in Edmonton. I'm not sure how scientific that is but the altitude does affect some folk....

I find that all our kids skin and mine gets very dry... the best moisturiser I have found is Dream Cream from Lush (there is a shop in Market Mall btw for the Calgary people). Wonderful cream - great on DD4's eczema, great on dry skin - doesn't irritate and is absorbed very quickly without being too greasy (smell isn't too feminine either for the men....). The only downside is that it is pricy.
Ooh! I love LUSH products. We've got a LUSH comming to Red Deer next year, I have my resume ready
