Pls Help Calgary - Edmonton
#1
Hi
Its a nightmare
I have a job opportunity in Calgary the OH has one in Edmonton.
I want to know the pro's & cons of both places?
If you were to compare Edmonton to a city in the UK, which one would it be?
I understand the weather is worse in Edmonton, why?
Help
OMG what do we do? we don't have the time to do another reccie before going over so we now have to make a decision from the UK. We have been to Calgary but not Edmonton.

The two cities are similar.
If skiing is super important to you, go to Calgary, as it's closer to the mountains.
The reason that Edmonton's weather has a reputation for being worse than Calgary's is that Edmonton does not get warm Chinook winds. Hence the winter is more relentless than it is in Calgary.
In my opinion, the two cities are so similar that it's not worth getting your knickers in a twist over the decision. Not that that will stop you from worrying, I'm sure.

Just out of curiosity, which UK city do you think is like Calgary (since you've been to Calgary and presumably are in a position to answer that question)?

Ooh tough decision!
WE liked both, Edmonton is the Capital and doesn't have the views of the Rockies like Calgary, but we visited both and like both...also if you are into shopping Edmonton has a massive mall!
Depends on what you are looking for, the kind of lifestyle you want?

I've only been to London, so I couldn't say. But I would have thought that there was no UK city that was like Edmonton.

Toronto has the vibe of London
Halifax has the pace of somewhere like Torquay/Bournemouth.
Calgary that is a little harder ...maybe like
Leamington Spa but on a larger scale. No - one shot me for the above

Anyway, as I indicated would be the case, your answer regarding the comparison with Calgary has provided you with your Edmonton comparison. Leamington Spa it is, but on a larger scale.

Shopping is a big plus for me even though Calgary has great shops, I see Edmonton has more to offer.
What I am looking for is a nice place to live, where I can travel to the shops, markets, flicks, gym, theatre, dining and night outs.
Im not asking for much am I .lol

I live in Sherwood Park, but work in Edmonton, and have just move here from Manchester.
If you have any specific questions, drop me a PM.
Good luck...

Both cities will offer you about the same shops, markets, flicks, gym, theatre, dining and night outs.
If you're into skiing or just enjoy trips to the mountains Calgary is much closer.
Edmonton has a reputation of being a bit more of a blue collar city and Calgary more of a white collar city.
Some people note that Edmonton is very flat except for the river valley whereas Calgary is more how can one put it "contoured".

From: Hampshire then Edmonton then Ponoka, then Calgary!

I have worked in Edmonton and now work in Calgary. If I had to make a choice I would sy that Calgary is easily the nicest dontown area and has a more obvious Theatre 'set' Much more cosmopolitan, Edmonton downtown is drab and looks shut at night! There are nice places to live outside of both cities so I would say thats the same for both. Edmonto has St Albert/Sherwood Park/Spruce Grove. Calgary has Airdrie/ Cochran/ and Okotoks. The shopping is very comparable, well at leaste at te moment as the 'outlet' shoppig mall just south o Airdrie, which is huge seems to be getting closer and closer to completion every time I drive past it! I think over all I prefer Calgary if only for the views of the mountains from my office window! And if the wife can have her say......we will never go back to Edmonton to live! Well tat my two penneth worth! Oh and I cannot compare any town or city in Englad to here there are just no similarities!!
