Toronto or Montreal. Montreal is more of a party town.

Montreal looks awesome. I'd love to learn French fluently as well.

However the job sitch in a bi-lingual town....they'd always pick a bi-lingual person i'm guessing

Nothing really it just depends on what you want. Some people don't like living on estates/subdivisions in the 'burbs and some people love it. There are more individual streets and houses but they tend to cost more.

Seen from the 401 it looks bleak and many of the streets look the same, but then you have access to shops, restaurants etc.

All depends on what you like.

There are some nice bits. Some of the houses north of the hospital are rather grand, but I suppose like anywhere else the nice bits are more money.

Personally I find the population density anywhere in the GTA beyond my tolerance level now. Its nice to visit occasionally, and nicer still to leave it all behind at the end of the day! Horses for courses I suppose.

I would prefer it over the west side of the city, or the much praised Beaches where you can't even park outside your own house. Most people on here who criticise it have never got off the 401 so haven't even been there.

I don't live in Oshawa but my youngest daughter goes to school there and has lots of friends who live there (and none of them are rednecks!!)
No one? Standards have dropped on here.

It depends on the industry. If your job entails dealing with the public, then usually yes, but not always. You're young, I say just do it, Montreal is a hell of a city.

Why don't you go to Montreal for a weekend and see if you like it. I was there last year for our recce trip and really enjoyed the night life but as we have two young kids Ottawa was clearly the better place to live.
Give it a try, you can always move again if you don't like it.

Sounds lame, but it'll probably help you a lot to check out some stats on the different cities (if you haven't already), as well as check out the wikipedia entries.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oshawa
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottawa

http://www.citystats.ca/city/Ontario/Toronto.html
http://www.citystats.ca/city/Ontario/Oshawa.html
http://www.citystats.ca/city/Ontario/Ottawa.html

Personally, Ottawa would be my choice of those three cities. Not as large/crazy as Toronto, cool atmosphere, decent economy. Only bad is that knowing french is a requirement for a lot of public related jobs...

I suspect most places have nice bits, if you know where to look. Viewed from the highways or from the main drags in the city, Gatineau looks like a right dump. Get away from those roads are there some really nice areas. Except in Hull, which really is a dump.

Clearly this is Hull Quebec we are talking about, Hull UK being one place that had no redeeming features as far as I could tell...

You don't consider a green phone box to be a redeeming feature?

OK. The Lac Leamy park is triffic (great place to cycle and ski). The rest of Hull is a toilet.

And Hull isn't a city/town. It's an area of a city.
