Re: Photo's!!
I know - have been doing some stuff with Heritage vancouver - amazing some of the projects. Pennsylvannia hotel was a big one . . others in the making. I like that area - the buildings have more history - most of the people are harmless. Have stood opposite Save on meats a few times of a late night waiting for the bus - no probs!

The area is actually quite cool and as previously posted, the buildings have lots of character and characters. I wouldn't want to live there though.

I actually love the area - it really is a community in change - lots to be done but the amount of change there at the moment is staggering. When the Paris block and Woodwards are complete there will be something like 600 additional residential units in the area - which will force further change. Concord Pacific is also planning developing the area. There is no where else for the city to go - change is inevitable.

I know the area, and The4BellsLondon isnt exaggerating. It's not a dangerous place, although it mayappear to be. The people there are for the most part harmless. You're in no more danger waiting for a bus there than you would anywhere else in the city.

I agree. It does take some getting used to though. If the area were to improve a bit more, I would consider living there. The city and the province are committed to turning the area around and recognize that the 'throw money at it' approach has not worked.

Some Ariel photos of vancouver - 1982 vs 2009 - amazing at how much the city has changed in such a short time. You can also see how the city will invariably expand to the DTES:

Here are some pic's taken at Port Dalhousie (near St Catherines) recently.
(The last one made me smile......reminds me of some places from back home!)
