We stayed there for a few days last month. I thought it was really grubby and looked like all the industry that was once there has moved out. They have tried to smarten up the waterfront but most of the town looks like it has seen better days.

I apologise in advance to anyone who lives there, but the people from Peterborough looked like they were in Darwins waiting room.

Question Living in Peterborough, Ontario

Hi there,

I am currently living with my fiancee in Peterbrough, Ontario, and have done so for the last 15 months now.

Simply put, the City is very poor downtown, but wealthy on the outskirts. This shows through the malls. The centre mall is struggling to keep vendors in situ, but the outskirt malls are thriving with good vendors and traffic is very healthily 'well off'.

Sadly the City in recent years has struggled with Industry leaving and now seems to rely heavily on the tourist industry. Industry is creeping back in, but not any big scale.

In fact, Peterborough, is recognised as a retirement city where the population consists of mainly retirees.

Pertsonally, I am not keen on the place, but really have no option to move at this time. I know that there are better places to live and will ultimately move out of Peterborough in due course.

Incidentally my fiancee has lived here most of her life and she thinks that she has been given more 'intelligence' and 'common sense' than the rest of the Peterborough population put together.

I'm not sure what that says about Peterborough and I suppose you will need to ultimately make your own mind up accordingly.

Either way, Good Luck

Wiz

Hello there,

Look into west of TO, there are relatively big towns and cities here. Am not telling you to move there, am just saying to look at these areas, if you happen to be a family man, there are so many things for kids to do round here, places to see, entertainment etc etc

The kids would not need you all the time to drive them around before they get to what they want to go and do. A lot of new houses round here in a community like setting. Am talking Milton, cambridge, Guelph, whilst you work in Mississauga where there a lot of jobs

If all that is not enough, there is all these to explore

Well, there are bigger suburbs of Toronto. Peterborough is within the Greater Toronto Area, so are many others. The others however, have by far more amenities, industry strong areas and close to many 'tourist' type attractions.

These places, in my opinion, are the better ones to re-locate to, such as: Mississauga, London, Brampton etc, etc.

Good Luck

How long has Peterborough been in the GTA? News to me. I certainly wouldnt call it a suburb of Toronto, and neither would friends who live there.

I wouldnt class it in the same terms as Mississauga, Brampton etc which seem to be part of the same amorphous GTA sprawl, one running into the next. Peterborough is very much its own place, although it is hard to tell where it ends and Lindsay begins.

What are you talking about?

GTA consists of the regional municipalities of Metropolitan Toronto, Durham, York, Peel,Halton and Hamilton-Wentworth.

Peterborough is in Peterborough County, not in the GTA, someone is pulling your leg. It has 4 lane highway access to the GTA, but is not in it.

Peterborough is very much a retirement/student town, about an hour from Toronto. They've been trying to change that with expanding the city to the north (and out by the Parkway in the south end), with new suburbs and modern retail outlets and malls away from the downtown core.

It's the same as any smaller city, though, the downtown is where the heritage is, but it easily looks rundown and "poor" so over time it expands. All cities seem to be in different stages of this. Peterborough is just a little behind

It's a nice place to live, though, especially as a student like I am. The locals (affectionately called "townies") are a bit scary at times, certainly in the pubs and clubs, but they grow on you. lol.

There's even a set of streets downtown one after another called London, Edinburgh, and Dublin... kinda neat
