Default Pet Shippers

Hi,
Can anyone recommend a good (and reasonable!) pet shippers. We are flying in to Halifax NS. We have a 6yr old Retriever.

Hi there,

We are planning on taking our 10yr old Dalmatian Domino to AB when we go (hopefully early may this year) we have done lots of research and have finally decided to do it directly through the airline. So far we have been quoted around £1500 from various pet travel companies but based on all her measurements and current weight were told it would be £890 with Air Canada. They will also guarantee that she will be on the same flight as us (something which the companies told us they couldn't do) and all we have to do is buy her a transit box (there are some cheaper 2nd hand ones available), book her on the flight when we book ours (up to 6 weeks before) and then drop her off at the animal check-in at the airport 4 hours before departure. If she was less than 35kg (inc box) she could have gone as excess baggage but unfortunately she isn't, so is going as live cargo, as excess baggage is a lot cheaper!

It is worth shopping around the net to get an idea on price then contacting the airlines to ask them directly.

Hope this helps.

we used airpets as we wanted our 3 dogs to come over a few days after us and we had moved into the house. We came via Halifax and took about 3 hours to collect them as we had to wait for a customs officer to go over to the cargo to check them out.

We used Overhill www.overhill.co.uk/ in Pensford, Nr. Bristol. We also didn't use the airline direct as we wanted the cat to arrive a few days after us. They board 3 nights for free and arrange export paperwork, transport etc.

Hi bainsey 36,

were looking to take our two labs and again the weight issue is the same as you mentioned.

who is doing your paperwork for taking domino? and what EXACTLY do you need?

i presume your getting domino vacinated with the rabies jab? if so how long before have you been advised to do this- cos you need the blood test as well.?

were having difficulty finding a rental in abbotsford that will accept them- those that will seem to want a massive bond!

sorry for all the questions we seem more worried about getting them organised than ourselves.

Glad it's not just us thinking more about the dog than ourselves, but at least we haven't got children to worry about!

Domino is already fully vaccinated and has her own Pet passport as we took her to France for Christmas 2007. She will need a check from a vet 24 hours prior to flying to confirm that she is fit to fly and they will also check she's free from fleas and ticks. All boosters need to be up to date and they need to be chipped. Also, you will need crates for them which are IATA approved.

As for finding a rental, we appreciate it's not easy, however we're hoping some landlords will be more considerate once we're there and they can meet Domino who is fully house trained. Some apparently ask for a larger deposit, some extra rent per month and some stipulate that you have to pay for the house to be professionally cleaned when you leave. So all in all, it doesn't sound too bad, but it can limit your choice.

Best of luck,
Nige and Soph'.

I brought out my cat as excess baggage.

Worked out much cheaper and shorter in terms of journey time, even it involved a taxi ride of 3 hours down to Heathrow and then an additional flight from Toronto Pearson to Thunder Bay.

My cat is really nervous and I was anxious about it, but it worked out fine. Excess baggage is cheaper and you can pick up your animal at the airport terminal instead of cargo so it is less stressful for the animal.
