Hi Elaine
You need to land before your medicals expire which is one year from date taken. You can land and come back to the UK as long as you fulfil the residency obligations.
My husband went to Canada for an interview a month ago and decided not to land as he had limited time available. At passport control he told them this and said he would be landing in a few months time with his family. This was absolutely fine.
