Packing containers / shippers

If shipping boxed items & furniture, do shipping companies give you a 'container' for both?

We were given a single container into which both boxes of stuff and furniture were placed. The difficult thing is calculating how big a container you need...

Don't bother with Allied Pickfords - I used them and they were badly disorganised and unhelpful...
