Default Orange Squash etc etc???

Hi

On our last visit to Ontario I found it almost impossible to find bottles of orange squash. Am I looking in the wrong places, or do Canadians not drink it? My daughter is not impressed as she loves the stuff.

Can any one think of any other, seamingly obvious items, that are not available in Canadian Supermarkets, but are common place in Asda, Tesco etc?

Just a bit of a brain teaser to keep everyone going!

My husband would sympathize with your daughter, as he also likes orange squash and can't find it. If you ask for orange squash here you will likely be handed a root vegetable similar to a pumpkin.

My husband gets his family to bring squash over whenever they visit. There was a store in Halifax with a British section that sometimes stocked it, for an outrageous mark-up. But other than British specialty stores I don't think you'll find it. You can get Ribena, if that is any consolation?

You were probably looking in the wrong bit of the supermarket. If its what I think you want it would not be with the bottles but in the centre of the store with other drinks. And under the wrong name - I think the stuff you are looking for is called "orange drink" here - to differentiate it from "orange juice".

We did find orange drink, but if it is what I think it is, it is already diluted. I am referring to the undiluted orange squash that you mix with water.

I believe that "orange drink" in Canada is more or less the same thing as English orange squash. Its orange flavoured water with no nutritional value. I think you should try to get used to frozen orange juice or the real orange juice in the cooler. Its made from real oranges and its much better for you.

Next best thing we found was the 'frozen cans' of juice that you drip into a jug and top up with water. It's not 'squash' but it's the next best thing.

A problem shared by me and my girlfriend too!!!!! It seems that unless it's fizzy pop or it's real juice you can't get it here. I asked someone at work about it and had to explain what it was to which they said "what a great idea!!!!" so it looks like there is a demand for it. That said we have found Ribena in Loblaws no problem.

In the meantime I'm drinking Guinness as a substitute

You cant get the undiluted stuff,( I think I saw some Kia-Ora once, but only once!) but the diluted orange drink is the same thing as far as I can tell. Might be worth trying "cool aide" or some of the frozen punches instead of the frozen 100% juice if thats not your cup of tea.

Can you even get frozen juice in the UK? I remeber my gran used to use it, but that was before tetrapacks. Having tasted the other side, the stuff in those cartons can be pretty nasty, and the fresh Tropicana, although great is really pricey. I used to buy that here too until my wife got me to try the frozen juice.

Frankly I cant see why I ever paid the extra for fresh stuff....unless your water supply sucks, which might taint the taste of frozen juice. At $1 a can, you cant really go wrong.

Introduce your kids to the joys of Kool-Aid!!! We have my mom (in canada still) ship the really cool flavours to us in the UK -- all the kids on the street are addicted!! You, as a parent, can control the sugar levels of the drink.

Look up what aspartame does to you and then tell me you want to keep giving your kids Squash -- it is loaded with aspartame!!!!

We keep our kids away from the stuff - shopping can get pricey but our kids health is worth it!!

aspartame. It sounds very dangerous, but there again, we keep getting told that nearly everything we eat is dangerous to us in some way, even the stuff we think is good for us, sometimes.

I take your point though.

You summed it up by describing the children on your street as "addicted" - they probably are!

Kool-aid along with squash, pop and any other drink with that many chemicals are not allowed in our house. If you are new to Canada you should read the ingredients before you buy it.

Did you know Kool-aid is used in kindergarten classrooms to colour home made play-doh!
