My experience with Walmart a few months ago was a good one too. I had my eyes tested and the guy told me that the glasses that I had prescribed some five years previously were still suitable for use. I'm supposed to wear them to take the strain of my aging eyes but I'm not very good at remembering to do it.

Anyway I felt that he was thorough in his inspection and pleased that he didn't feel the need to prescribe just because he could have.

A few years ago I tried to buy glasses in Canada - my prescription is high and in the UK I had always bought extra thin glass lenses. In Canada, and the US, it was only possible to get plastic lenses and they were much thicker, and more expensive (the x-rate was 2.2 at the time!) Something to do with Health & Safety - is this still the case?

For some cheaper non-walmart/non-costco glasses/lenses try http://www.clearlycontacts.ca/

Lots of contacts (obviously), but plenty of options for glasses too. I haven't ordered mine yet, but $99 for lenses and fancy frames is a steal.
