I would agree that Toronto would be a good bet for a place to start. As an artist myself, Calgary would be the last place I headed to. Vancouver too wet and mild in summer.

If you prefer dry hot summers to humid and hot like it would be in Toronto then maybe give Saskatoon a thought.
Apparently quite arty with some festivals and dry and hot in summer and cold in winter.
