Old fashioned attitudes

Canadians think that having the Brit/Royale Family link gives them cultural bonus points over the 'Merkans. The 'Merkans, thought they loathe to admit it publicly, are jealous of Canada's Brit/Royale Family heritage, but would never admit it. I don't understand it, don't take any interest in it, but it is there.

That's not right about Americans. Don't forget they identify with their historical background (one great grandparent from Ireland and you're an Irish-American), so those of English background think of them as being their royal family as much as anyone else's. They're not jealous of Canadians as Canada doesn't register on their radar; they just don't know what it is.

Yes true I will take that on board and be more open with the answer and compliment them on the beauty of Canada.
I just thought he was a bit intrusive , I wouldn't go around questioning other immigrants there reasons for moving and stating "well I seen it on the tele cant understand why you moved personally", I think thats why I thought it was old fashioned.

Smelly, I would say the above comment is quite realistic one, but feelings about Canada by Canadians seem to be provicially specific in some ways. When I moved to BC from Australia, I was dreading telling people where I moved from because I expected every response to be "Why in God's name would you leave Australia and move here???" This expectation was based on my experiences of living in Ontario, where I grew up--most people I went to school with hated the place and wanted to leave (few did). At the same time, many many Canadians consider Australia and New Zealand to be paradise on earth and so I thought many people would want me to justify my seemingly crazy action. However, I soon found out that people from BC are so in love with the place that they don't question why I would move here. So perhaps it is a case of where you live in Canada. But prove my theory wrong and say you now live in BC!

While we were in Toronto last year a women in one of the shops asked me where i was from and when i said England she replied " Arrrrr London, i love London... Do you know the spice girls???
I nearly fell off my pirch, how stupid are they, and why when you say your from England do they always think its just London? lol

On the slipside.... I'm Canadian and while touring through England I was asked:
Oh you're from Canada... then you must know so & so in Toronto (I live approx. 4.5 hours flight time from Toronto)
Canada.... It must be a real problem with the wild animals like Moose & bear in your garden all the time!
Oh.... You get so much snow & bitter cold temperatures there & the ice storms are horrible. It's soooo humid in the summer there too. (we live in an area that doesn't see huge amounts of snow in the winter & I personally have never seen an ice storm. Being a semi-arrid location, we generally don't experience the high humidity factor)
In my opinion, no matter where you go, you're going to have someone that tries to make conversation with the little knowledge that they know about your country. I took it as an opportunity to converse & enlighten them.
