Me and hubby are in a similar position to you.

we hope to be in NS in about 5 years time so are gathering as much info as we can

Property prices are low compared to the UK.....

Thanks for your message. We're about 5 years away too - still researching it all before we put in an application. My hubby is obsessed with looking at property in NS ... all I hear out of him these days is 'oh my god look at THIS one' :-)

We had our house valued yesterday and the estage agent was saying things like 'oh what fabulous big windows' and 'what a great bathroom' ... he made us all sentimental! It's our first home together and we've very painstakingly renovated it ... we've been very happy here. It made us realise what a wrench it will be to let it go! Hubby and I were very quiet last night (although saying that, it costs us a bloody fortune and we have no life!)

Sounds like me and your hubby are the same - I'm obsessed with looking at property too It's just so unbelievable when you compare everything to the UK......

Good luck with the house - it's funny how you go all sentimental with houses- but just think what you could end up with in Nova Scotia. I'm obsessed with looking up the adresses of real estate on google earth!!!! It's brilliant for seeing where the house is situated

No we haven't applied yet but I think we are going to apply for PR via the Skilled Worker route with me as the main applicant. We are going to put our application in in about 12-18 months time. Our mortgage only has 8 years left on it so we are aiming to pay it of early and use the equity to fund our move and put a huge deposit on a property over there. I think this timescale will give us chance to settle all our financial commtments and prepare for our new life I'm sounding like a complete saddo now

This site is brilliant - you can research everything. We figured it can't hurt to find everything out before we put our application in.

So we now have our get away plan in place......

Which areas of Nova Scotia do you like the look of best?

No idea yet! I fancy Nova Scotia, but I guess we'll end up going where the jobs are. We're still at very early stages of looking into it. I think they way you're doing it is really sensible; not a saddo at all

Next thing for us is the expo next month, then maybe take a trip over nearer the end of this year. We're both studying round full-time work at the moment and we want to get that out of the way before we apply.

Do you think that the house prices in Nova Scotia will still look cheap 5 years from now and that it is worth staying in a UK housing market that is falling? What will be the gain?

Your not surely suggesting that Nova Scotian house prices will reach the level of those in the UK, even in 5 years time?

I thought that housing in NS had a "ceiling" on what prices had gone for locally, to try to stop house price increases similar to UK?

A neighbour a couple of houses down from us has just sold her house for $300k. and it is more a stately home than a house; fourteen rooms, all done up beautifully and 2 acres, just out of town but still on town water and sewers. She said the realtor told her it was the maximum he could charge for the area (Annapolis) because house prices just don't rise very fast in NS. £150k; you wouldn't get a tiny semi here for that....

We have a beautiful house in the Annapolis valley and couldn't believe the prices! We move in five weeks time and I am starting to get nervous now, but to the OP the south shore is beautiful too, so I guess it depends on where you feel most at home. Good luck with your search!

No but prices are dropping fast in the UK whilst steadily increasing in NS.

Why would they have a ceiling? Never heard of that being the case anywhere in the world. Maximum price at a given time for a type of property in a certain location maybe.
Some areas fair better than others when it comes to prices. Oceanfront doing the best being sought after all over the world and NS does have a lot of ocean frontage.

Hi and yes good luck with your research and MLS searches but please don't get too obsessed with property prices.. there are many other factors to life in Nova Scotia to consider, its really a different lifestyle here compared to other provinces that are more popular, we do need immigration in this province and skilled workers, it can be disappointing to some applicants that wages arent as high as other main stream cities and its a slower pace of life , most employment is centred around the urban areas , its a great lifestyle here especially for families but please consider all that it has to offer not just reasonable house prices...

I agree with both comments. More disposable income can improve the quality of life fo some people but if you don't like the lifestyle/environment where you are living that becomes unimportant.
