Not enough points to get into Canada!!!
PLEASE HELP!!! We are exhausted with all the information we have obtained over the past few months over the imigration process and how it would be possible for me and my family to acheive our dream and emigrate to Canada. I have 8 years work experience as a Track Chargeman (foreman) on the Railway in the UK (Track and Drainage Maintenance). I have research so much on information for railway maintenance work in Canada and have seen some job vacancies but most companies are asking that you are a Canadian Citizen before you can even apply. This is also not classed as a skilled profession so I would not meet the minimum points through the Federal Skilled Work Scheme, so I believe the best option would be to try and obtain an offer of employment, in which I could then apply for a work permit. (Is this correct first of all?) But our main concern is that work permits are temporary, would it be possible to apply for permanant residance once the temporary permit is due to expiry and if a permanant job position was offered of course, how likely would it be, to be successful? If there is anyone out there that could help answer our questions we would be eternally grateful. We would prefer to emigrate to Western Canada. I have read so many success stories of people that have succeeded but have yet found anyone that didn't have the required points but still found a way. We have booked a research trip to Western Canada in May this year, we are hiring a motorhome so we can travel around and see different areas, we plan to take our children to visit the schools there and hopefully will receive a lot of answers to our questions. I am also hoping to have a meeting with Canadian Pacific Railway to see how easy it would be to recieve an offer of employment but I don't know how easy that will be. I thank everyone in advance for any information they feel would be beneficial to us.
Kindest regards. Karl and family.

By the sounds of it, you are doing all the right things. Canadian employers really appreciate face to face contact from potential employees, so intending to arrange a meeting while you are over here on your trip is a VERY good idea. They may well be able to offer you employment through a PNP (provincial nominee programme) so research this before you go and take info with you, as many employers don't know much about the scheme. I'm no expert as I came here with a skilled worker visa, but from what I understand about it, employment offers and work permits are the way to go these days anyway - you'll get here much faster.
Make sure you check out BC and Alberta for potential places to settle and try to arrange meetings with potential employers in both provinces if you can (especially if you plan to travel around in your motor home).
Good luck. We've only been here a few months, but are so glad we came and feel it has been the life-changing move we always wanted. Follow your dream!

Hi
1. You are correct that you job probably falls into Category C of the NOC, so it is considered semi-skilled. Unless your job description can fall into 7216
http://tinyurl.com/czo2rh which is considered skill level B
2. I think that you will find it extremely difficult to get an approved job offer from CP/CN there is a very strong union pecking order for railway jobs.
3. Your job skills are not in either of the lists of Occupations under Demand in either BC or Alberta PNP programs.
4. Just enjoy your holiday.

Iam sure that there is more than just Railway work you can do and it may be necassary for you to re train to make the move but I would not give up. Surely you have some form of skills training that you have in your current job that can be used?
