Default North Van school district found to discriminate against dyslexic child

Listening to this on the CEEB, they elected to keep some "outdoor school" open rather than keep a centre for special needs kids open, so the special needs kids were left to flounder. Nice priorites there, North Van

Is it not the current educational trend to include as many kids as possible within the regular school streams?

Some might argue that is the opposite of discriminating. Whether its whats best for special needs kids on the other hand is another question, but it seems to me the judgment could be used to suggest that the regular school streams (with additional in class support) are unable to help special needs kids, which Im not sure is the case. We will never know how Jeffs life would have been had he stayed in the provincial system.

I suppose the argument here is really should kids with special needs be integrated into the regular school system, or should they be sent to schools set up entirely for their needs. In this case he went to a private school for special needs kids, and seems to have flourished.

In a society with finite resources though where should the line be drawn as to how to help the most educationally needy children, when is enough enough?

Not sure what the Outdoor School was. Maybe its something like our boards Frink Center, which is a facility widely used by all the schools in the board area for quite a few parts of the curriculum. When moneys is tight, hard choices have to made, and someone will always end up unhappy as a result, so I really dont envy those in the hot seat.
