Newfoundlander moving back!
#46

I have heard of the Downhomer magazine and used to have it shipped to the UK every now and then...has it changed it's name to Downhome or is it a different entity altogether?

Hi Chris and welcome; I am sure we will meet up once you and your family are here. Are either of you from the rock or are you just lucky you found Newfoundland

We were gobsmacked with just how amazing the place is when we came for a long weekend back in August.
The weather will be a little different when we come, be we loves snow!
Downhomer became Downhome, same mag, same people, owned by the Young family, who also own the Downhome shop in the city.
Can't wait to get out there, EVERYONE from NL we have spoken to, have offered so much support and friendship, it's amazing.

Hiya - no...both British but lucky enough to have found Newfoundland, we actually saw it on the TV and even then decided it was where we wanted to go.

Um, glad you like snow. My OH said that too and I think it is probably his fault we are having a snow filled winter; I don't think he is over it yet.
How old are your children? Our son is 7 and has settled in very well; he has started to pick up the accent already and we have heard a few noticeable word changes. My step daughter is 21 and her Somerset accent seems to be getting broader the longer she is here, not sure what that is all about but it makes us chuckle every time someone says she sounds grand
Nought wrong with Somerset mind but I love the fact that she is fighting against the Newfie accent.Any questions feel free to ask.

Cool - kids are 11 and 5, both very much looking forward to coming over, they will so pick up the accent.
I think once we are all settled, we'll have to have a get together, everyone on here, now in the best place on Earth.
And thanks for the offer of help too, much appreciated.

We are just a few weeks ahead of you - arrived 30th Nov 2007. Loving it so far despite the fact that according to the local news there's been 7ft of snow so far this winter!! One of our dogs is loving it - he was even in the sea the other day when it was -5. The other one just looked at him as if he was a complete idiot!
Any help we can give, just give us a shout

Newfoundland is truely a hidden gem in the world and I don't think many Canadians know about it either

I asked her if she had ever been - obviously she had not.
The chap I met, had been and raved, raved and loved the place, said I was the luckyest person alive.
So you're right, many Canadians (who have never been), think it's the back end of beyond.
But 'we' know different.
I feel lucky and actually choosen to be coming and am very very happy.

Hello Chris! Good morning!
Yes, unfortunately, those who have never been to the rock will never understand the magic that it possesses. I have travelled the world over and all over Canada, and honestly it is the best place in the world. Thank goodness, my OH thinks so too. I know a lot of people who would love to visit there (Canadians, and CFA's), but it is the cost that prevents them from coming unfortunately. Of course, there are those who turn their noses down to anything unique and different. Their loss.
I look forward to meeting all of you one day soon. I think that you, your wife, and children will really like the rock. It is a great place to raise a family. We will all have to have a "playgroup" get together. lol
A late congrats on your job at the Downhome! How exciting! It is a really nice place downtown.

Apropos to nothing, here's a Disney joke. It only works if you imagine it in a Scottish, preferably Glaswegian accent.......
What's the difference between Bing Crosby and Walt Disney?
"Bing, sings but Walt, Dis'nae!"
