Hubby could emigrate to St Pierre and Michquelon, that is not to far from The Rock.

Two Newfs watching 9.00p.m news, take a Bet as to whether the guy threatening to jump does, the one who bets he would, wins.

However, before he takes his friends money he admits he had already watched it on the noon news, to which his friend admits, he too had seen the event also, he just thought he wouldn't do it twice.

Ax,

hummm, I was a baygirl as a child then as a teenager move to town...Ah okay, I thought that it was mainly Paradise where all the "baymen" (ouch!) were buying? Congrats on buying as well!

pinkmcfarquhar,

Good to hear that your doggies got home safe and sound. We have to figure out something with our cat, what did you do about them using the toilet? tmi, I doubt that the cat tray will fit in her carrybox....Congrats on your house purchase in Outer Cove! You must be very excited! It is a beautiful area!
I hope that you medicals come in soon! Sheesh, what do they expect you to do to the angels in the meantime?

We so want to buy as well( before the housing becomes too expensive to buy), but it does require some research! Plus, I can't live too far out since I will expect to have a 6:30 morning call if I am lucky.

All the Baymen are buying houses in Paradise & also Airport Heights in the East End. Hence the name 'Outport Heights' by which it's known locally.

Danny Millions sure talks tough, too bad he wasn't tehre before Joey, Newfoundland would have been enjoying all that hydro money instead of getting ripped off bvy PQ.

I hope when the contract comes up that The Rock gets some payback for the millions that Quebec has made off them.

Wife, Air Force Brat, Bin L, Goose Bay, mixed memories.

Hi there,

I checked out alcove suites and chalets, but their daily prices are crazy expensive! How much did you pay monthly if you don't mind me asking....

The ones on the web are expensive, but he has a few that he manages that he rents out monthly/longer periods. Easiest thing probably to drop him an e-mail.

At the moment, paying $1275 a month for a 3 bed house with garden downtown (longs hill area), including all bills (heat, light, phone, cable, internet). Others we looked at when we came over in September were up to $1750 a month including bills, but we needed somewhere with a garden and that would accept two largish dogs so were quite restricted in our choice. Also, we wanted a bit of flexibility as we didn't want to take out a year long lease if we could help it.

Don't know what the dogs did about the loo during the flight?? Don't think I want to know! No major messes in their crates when we picked them up at the airport. But I know in the past (from a short stay in rubbish kennels) that if they don't think they are getting out they just don't drink the same.

pinkmcfarquhar,

Thanks for the valuable information!

Gosh! It has only been 5 years since I have been away, but rental prices have really gone up! I think our only possible option would be renting an appart for now. I still have to find job! I will email him though, you never know.

When do you hope to hear about your medicals. Good luck with that. I hope that we will be hearing from Maria soon......Are you looking forward to teaching in NL?

We arrived in August ready for the new school year (our son is 7) and it took me until November to find work (I am doing Payroll/Employee Care at a local call centre). In the UK I worked in Adult Education and Training for many years but it has been nigh on impossible for me to find a professional well paying job despite networking, cold calling, resumes, begging relatives etc. Last week I was called for an interview as a result of a resume I submitted in October - the job was as a Finance Administrator and the pay was less than $10 an hour - I could have cried I was so disappointed. There is an over abundance of retail work and there seems to be a lot of low paid work but teaching jobs, as AX said, are so hard to get and adult ed is just the same.

We didn't think we had much to bring with us but in the end we bit the bullet and shipped over a 20ft container holding all of our worldly goods and I am really glad we did. I found the prices here had gone up substanially from what I remembered. Also; we have bought a house here and have double the rooms we had in the UK so we needed a lot more.

We rented a 3 bed house (in Cowan Heights) with a downstairs rec room and laundry room for 3 months - we paid $800 a month plus utilities. We would love to live out of town but my OH works in Donovans and my Mom lives on Blackmarsh Rd so we wanted to be close to her and it has been a god send. She does my snow day babysitting (we have had about 5 already!!) and our son loves spending weekends with Nanny We have a lot of spontaneity with Mom that we wouldn't have if we didn't live within a few minutes of her so we won't be going far for a while.

Have you started looking around the mls website yet? I also found the local Remax website and Exit Realty websites very helpful http://www.remax.nf.ca/ http://www.exitrealtynl.com/.

A friend of mine has her own agency doing rental and sales; her website has a few listings to give you a feel for what is around http://www.burkecanada.com/

If you need anything feel free to ask.

Hey TG!

I was just looking at the public commisions office jobs and they sometimes have quite a few jobs there. There is one for teaching Adults but it is in Baie Verte... If you geared your cv to what they need and want, it sounds like you have it all. I will attach the link I am sure that you checked this out already.

Thanks for the advice on housing as well! Yes, it looks like a lot of these places are well over a thousand dollars, and with the move, baby, and me not working, I think that it would be virtually impossible. Perhaps it is better that we buy asap as well( although expensive-relatively speaking- at least it will be ours in the end). Was it difficult to buy?

Yes, moving back to be close to family was so very important to me as well.

I am sorry that NL has such crap wages! That must be very demoralizing! We wouldn't have moved back home if one of us didn't have a job to go to. NL is a fabulous place, but it is not so cool if you don't have a job/or a job that pays badly! I am not looking forward to beating the pavement while worrying whether or not my baby is coping well with daycare, but I tell myself that it will all work out in the end........just bumps on the road. But here in France, I couldn't work in my field because their system is based on citizenship, and concours (competitive exams). I didn't want and couldn't compete with native speakers and the whole country straight away! Wages are pretty low here as well, and when you think how crazy expensive housing is, it is pretty terrible. The positive side to NL is that housing is relatively cheaper than Europe, and it is a fantastic place to raise your children.

I am sure that I will ask a lot more questions. I just don't want to drive all you guys crazy!

Cost of Living is lower in NL so you don't need $80k to pay a Mortgage, plus good jobs have always been hard to find, that is why skilled Educated labour is the Island's biggest export.

A Couple could easily make over $100k in TO, but it costs $300k for a 1 bedroom Condo.

Hi there Howard1944,

Yes, you are right. The cost of living is a lot lower! I really shouldn't complain.

I am quite positive all will go well once we are home. It is the waiting game that is the hardest.
