Default Need Help in Vanocuver

Hi,

We travelled to Vancouver for 2 weeks as an overview trip to get a feel of Vancouver. We loved the city and the people out there. We are thinking of doing our movement sometime next year.

I have following questions.

- I am from IT background. How is the market situation for IT jobs ??
- In which part of year the companies are hiring ?
- If I have have to rent an apartment w/o having job in hand what kind of challenges I will have to face??
- How is the public school system in Vancouver and in surrounding area?? I have 2 kids( 9 yrs and 5 year).

Any help would be great.

Thx and Rdgs,
Cooldude

Hi there - there have been a number of threads about IT so you should maybe search for that (not being IT minded I have no idea what to tell you although others will say Ontario is the province for IT).

First I think you need to determine how you are going to emigrate - do you qualify as a FSW, if not you will need a job offer from a prospective employer to gain a temporary work permit. I think BC has a PNP scheme too so thats something to look into.

Regarding renting an apartment there are again numerous threads on this especially in Vancouver seeing as its so super duper expensive - however I would think that your prospective landlord would want to see some sort of proof that you have finances in the bank to cover the rent for the duration of your lease period if you have no job. They will definately want a months rent in advance and a damage deposit.

Hi Mandy,

Thanks for your reply.

As per my research it seems it will be difficult to get the job from remote. So I will have to land w/o job and then look for the job.

Seems to not be great at the mo (see this current thread.......http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=732730 ) but a quick forum search should give you moe info.

Not heard of them hiring in a specific time period. Might be a bit quieter over xmas etc, but I don't think you should limit your hunt it to one time of year.

Do you already have a visa? If not, then from what you've said you'll need a job offer to get a visa anyway, so would have one in place before moving.

Good luck.

I've just merged your two threads, please don't post the same thing twice it two different parts of the forum. If you are in doubt as to which part of the forum to post your thread in, then follow the link in my signature which has an article on which part of the forum is for what.

Thanks.

Is there such a thing as an IT job? I thought everyone had to be a specialist of some sort. It is not really my field but there still seems to be demand in the games industry.

- In which part of year the companies are hiring ?
Avoid the holiday periods. The most activity seems to be in January/February and right about now - Sept and Oct. However, hiring goes on throughout the year.

- If I have have to rent an apartment w/o having job in hand what kind of challenges I will have to face??
References from previous landlords will help a lot, as will proof of funds. Landlords cannot ask for a larger than usual deposit - first month down and half a month damage deposit - but you can always offer to pay x months in advance if you feel this will clinch a place you like.

As an aside, never pay rent by cash, especially if it is in advance. Some landlords will require post dated cheques to cover the term of the lease, others that the rent to be paid by per-authorized debit (direct debit). This is OK.

- How is the public school system in Vancouver and in surrounding area?? I have 2 kids( 9 yrs and 5 year).
As I have said many times before, if you find an area where you like to live the chances are that the local school will suit your kids just fine. Don't sweat this one. The vast majority of people send their kids to the local public school.
