Some of the places it's not that bad because the road is big enough.

Hi Elaine,
We're also about to move to Vancouver and are looking for a rental too. We've found Padmapper.com/Vancouver to be the easiest way to look for something, it seems to have all the stuff listed on craigslist and kijiji. We've got 2 kids aged 5 & 8 and my husband will be working in Surrey, we want to be as central as possible so are looking at False Creek towards Kitsilano which are both family friendly and false creek has good transport links. We also looked at Maple ridge a couple of years ago but ruled it out as it felt very remote to me, which isn't what we want. Like others have said, it depends a lot on budget and where your husband will be working. I think someone else mentioned Steveston, that was a nice place, very small, but didn't seem as remote as maple ridge and would be handier for Richmond. Good luck with your search!

My husband moved to Vancouver a short time ago. He is currently renting a property in the Oakridge area with 2 friends. We are hoping to join him ASAP. I have been looking online to try to get an idea of rental prices for a place for our family (2 adults and 2 small kids). Just wondered if anyone could firstly give me an idea of the best areas for families with young children. He has been told that Maple Ridge is quite good. Anywhere else?

And secondly what's the best websites to check? So far I have been checking Kijiji and Craigslist. Has anyone used the real estate agents for rental properties? Have they been useful? Or is it best to keep looking for properties myself?

Thanks, any help that anyone could offer would be very much appreciated!

To further clarify, Steveston is a village in Richmond, hence it feels small, but it's still a part of the City of Richmond. It's at the south-west coast of Richmond at the mouth of the Fraser and has a lot of BC's fishing heritage (small museums, large fishing fleet selling fresh fish off boats, fish & chips shops, etc.). The community itself pre-dates Vancouver, oddly enough! It's basically the charming part of Richmond, and strangely one of the lesser Chinese areas (although the area was traditionally home to a Japanese fishing community back in the late 1800s until WWII) - so Asian culture has always been a part of Richmond's identity.

I haven't spent much time in Maple Ridge, but it is definitely more remote, and rural at the foothills of the mountains. Quaint it is not, but for those seeking cheaper, larger properties, it's an option. The sacrifice is that culturally it feels like a backwater, it lacks the multicultural population found elsewhere in Vancouver*, and you'd be reliant upon your car... or pickup truck, which seems to be popular there. I would only move there after spending time elsewhere around Vancouver, and after visiting and exploring, to make sure it's exactly what you want.

* According to Statistics Canada, Maple Ridge is 85% white. Chinese makes up 2.3% of the population:
