We give a direct debit order to Custom House currency brokers, I book a rate, they take the money direct from my account and then deposit it into my CAN$ account. I pay no transfer fees or charges for this. Banks charge a wire transfer fee and the rate is usually a few points lower.

The spread between the buy and sell rate. What they charge us is more than they pay for the currency.

http://www.customhouse.com/

We use a few currencies for business and it works very well for us and the rate we get is very competitive.
