Fair point but for quality of life the city is the place to be.

That depends.
For us.......30 somethings with small children, being in the city is NOT the best place for us to be.

If you are young, and single and want the nightlife on your doorstep, then maybe it is.

Sh Pk offers us everything we want including good restaurants and bars and a theatre and a multitude of leisure opportunities (when we want it) and our quality of life here is perfect..........for us !!!!

Nobodies requirements are necessarily the same.

i looked long and hard at the north of the city and have to agree with r2d2, sounds appealing in the blurb, matt berry in particular, but Beverley nearby is the roughest part of the city in my opinion, worse than millwoods. that said i travelled at peak time on purpose to see what it was like, nothing like deansgate and the manc way, its busy but traffic flows. the housing around the university is lovely and you are minutes walk away from whyte ave where its happening. if thats your thing i'd look to the nw and ne of the campus, closer to the parks and river, nicer it gets.

Yes, Beverly, Hermitage, Clareview and Londonderry are all to be avoided IMO, but Castledowns in the north is ok. I agree that the areas south, west and north (across the river) of the university are very desirable.

we stayed with friends in S P in summer, but couln't work out on our own how long it would take to get to UoA. Also when we look on mls at S p it seems that it is also split into different areas. Are all areas of SP good or are there places to avoid?
The link has been confusing as some folks say the north is ok whilst others wouldn't go there.
If we head for areas close to the UoA would this not be like living in the centre of Manchester?

The way it works in Sh Pk is that each 'sub-division' has its own name, so if you look on MLS it will say a property is in Heritage Hills or Craigavon or Glen Allan etc etc. All are within the 'hamlet' of Sherwood Park though.
Just makes it easier to find addresses.

There are no bad parts of Sh Pk as far as I am aware. Personal prefence of area may come into play. It has older areas and new developments.. Its a great family community. As for your question about distance to U 0f A from Sh Pk, pm Linda P. Her hub should be able to answer that one for you.

I think some people are talking about IMMEDIATELY north of the river, but within the city centre core, which is probably OK, has some nice areas, and others (me) were talking about the outlying areas away from the downtown, ie closer to the Yellowhead highway, some of which I have heard are pretty undesirable.
Hope that helps

It takes about 20 minutes to drive from SP to the UofA.

when i say north of the city, i mean just that, not the northern part of the city centre. to be precise, once you have gone north of 104ave, left city. from there to yellowhead like poorer parts of salford on way out of manchester, water st. and quays. north over yellowhead and you hit benchill, sharston and wythenshawe equivilent. keep north to 167 ave and improves with mostly new developments, i found lorelei, canossa, chambery the best. however, go to far north toward cfb edmonton and you hit pretty barren wasteground with very large electricity pylons for a view and the new 6 lane highway being built.
specifically around the uni, windsor park and belgravia very nice but with prices to match, nothing like manchester, very old world.

yep, agreed apart from brander gardens and the areas around the end of 111st nr whitemud, basically i found the closer you got to the freeway the worse it got, as to be expected i suppose.

hi
i am just waiting for my job offer in post (getting LMO as we speak) from UoA hospital. why did you pick S P to live as opposed to anywhere else?
what are the older areas of S P called as when we looked round last summer everything appeared to be new build with houses going up everwhere.
What is the oldest property you would go for as it seems the newer the better over there unlike over here.

Hi Jo
I'm guessing you didn't browse the whole of Sh Pk then, as there are tons of older more established area's, with leafy streets and gardens.

If you view MLS. some of those areas are, Mills Haven, Glen Allan, Woodbridge Farms, Brentwood, Westboro, Sherwood Heights, Maplewood, Village on the Lake, and no doubt others I have missed

Then you have the sub-divisions that contain a variety of housing ranging from 15/20 yrs old right up to new builds done in the past few yrs, such as Nottingham, The Ridge, Heritage Hills, etc etc.

Then there the brand new subs such as Lakeland Ridge and Aspen Trails and tons more heading off towards The Yellowhead.
