moving to Edmonton

We are hopefully moving to Edmonton in early summer depending on the wait for WP. We have been looking at houses in Beaumont(leduc) and Spruce Grove. I wonder if any one can tell me what the commute time to UoA would be. Also I need to be able to get to the UoA within 30 mins off-peak. Is this do -able or should we be looking in another area?

Hi Bear Diesel

Think you are hours away from U of A border up there in Leduc.

I am going to a place called Lethbridge which is about hour away from the border and Edmonton is about 5 hour drive from me !

Gaynor,

U of A, is University of Alberta, the campus is on the south side in Edmonton.;)

To drive from Beaumont to the University in 30 minutes is possible according to Google maps.

Cheers

Commute time from/to the U of A to/from Spruce Grove is about 29 minutes.

thanks for the info. does anyone know how hard/easy it is to cross the river at peak times if we were to look at north Edmonton as the houses are less dollars north of the river.

I work in Manchester and commute in at peak times. Off peak the journey is 30 mins, in the rush hour this takes anything upto 90 mins.
we want to live on the outskirts but not where the above is going to be repeated!
i spend upto 2 hours a day sat on a slow moving carpark. I know the scenery is better over there but I'm wasting 10 hours a week over here and the sceneray ain't that apealing

Know what you mean with the commute - hubby works in Northwich and it can take him anything between 1 hour and 2.5 hours to get home at night :scared:

do you know ----I guessed you were in Manchester as your Lication state Manchester 2 Lethbridge!!!!!! should have been a detective---- wonder if they get across the pond any easier.
we live north-north east of Manchester in Bacup. Was a small place but now getting bigger as everyone moves out of Manchestoooor to be in the country. Only thing wrong is that the planning dept forgot that the road is still a single track. houses going up at a rate of knotts and the extra 49000 cars are all competing for the same bit of dirt track!!!!!! Bloody foreigners!!!!!
The cars are scaring the horse and carts!!!
I have just been offered a job in Edmonton, am waiting for confirmation in the post then I can apply for visa---Guess what the waiting time for visa has gone skyward too.
Ah well hopefully we'll be there before x-mas

You should get to U of A from those locations, in that time frame (OFF peak)
During rush hour may lengthen it, but not as bad as Manchester.
From Leduc, you'd head up Gateway Boulevard, which is a bit stop/start due to all the lights, but about 4 lanes most of the way. From Beaumont there is an alternative route.
Bear in mind there is a lot of road construction going on in the South of the City at the mo, which eventually should spread the traffic around more (new Ring Road called Anthony Henday Drive)

Personally I wouldn't touch North of the city.( Apart from St Albert, which is more Northwest) Its cheaper for a reason
Yellowhead Highway aint pretty !!!!

I haven't lived in Edmonton for some time now, but crossing the river at peak times was not that much longer. If you will be working at/near the University, you may want to take advantage of the LRT (light rail transit) system in Edmonton.

Here are a few photos of the LRT going over the river to the university:

You are probably better off renting to start out with, if you're going to the UofA then all of your friends will most likley live on the south side as it's a more desirable place to live. You don't want to be the only person having to drive for up to an hour to get home on Friday night whilst all of your mates are at the pub. Also there isn't much to do in the 'burbs.

Bear in mind, its not only the cost of housing increasing sharply here. Rental costs have soared too.
Houses prices here are expected to rise further this yr, an estimated 10-15% according to the Edm Journal.
