Canada has the benefit of natural resources but is wedged between two imperial powers who would just walk in and take what they want if things ever turned really nasty. They would fight each other but Canada would just be a bystander.

If you're looking for somewhere remote and self sufficient to withstand a future "doomsday" scenario wouldn't New Zealand be a better bet?

The UK now seems to have developed a uniquely unbalanced economy where the banking, sales and financial services industries, instead of being secondary to the sectors that generate true wealth, have become the tail that wags the dog. Indeed London has just become the worlds biggest casino operation over the last 10 years. Its true that UK has chosen to import more than it exports for a long time now. However in the past the UK has had the wealth to do so. As that wealth disipates over time the ability to afford the imports will diminish.

In my scenario most countries in the world will be suffering immensely under the pressure of growing and ageing populations chasing fewer resources.

While i think Canada is not immune and will certainly suffer, would people agree that ultimately Canada is in a far better position to survive then most other countries especially the UK, US and most European countries?

Would it be true to say that in a global armageddon triggered imo by a global financial collapse that Canada could pull up the drawbridge and be totally self sufficient?

( Happy soul arn`t i )

I think your being too much of an optimist mate, I understand that the UK is being overrun with asian usurpers whose goal is to do to Britain what Britain did to their countries and all that, what was it that the god deity his holiness Sir Bob Geldoff said, 'you shall reap what you sow' (think it was him in any case)..

But your forgetting that with all this global warming (again reaping the wrath of the gods), that when the icebergs do surely melt that most of England will be submerged and there will only be us Taffies and the Scotties left!

Whereas Canada (god rest her soul) will be oil rich with all the access gained to the rich fields in the North Pole.

Actually I was talking to a fellow the other day in Washington DC (whilst leaning against a bar), who was telling me that the world will end in 2012 (after the Olympics perhaps) when the Earth's pole's will suddenly switch between North to South, it will be mayhem, although its the penguins I feel sorry for, they won't know where they are.

Actually access might be harder as the permafrost will thaw, making most of it a bog. Besides, there is probably a good chance that Canadas "dirty" oil will be one of the first things to go when the reality of global warming hits and the politicians have to do something to limit emissions.

I think they'll still be in Tesco or Sainsbury's. Usually in packs of 7, but sometimes in 14.

But when the polar ice cap melts there will be nice "clean" oil offshore to go for.

Yeah, i guess that if we reach the point that the polar ice caps have melted , then the greenhouse effect will be in full on snowball mode and nothing we do will make a damned bit of difference, so we might as well go back to an oil burning economy and be damned...

At least then my house will be waterfront and worth twice as much.

And the US and Russia will tell we can drill when we want too.......

If we're lucky 50% will be piped through Canada (if Canada still exists as an independant nation and not another anexed state reporting in to washington)and the profit will be made on the pipeline

the drills will be US and Russian

The americans have already redrawn the map with scant regard for the international conventions when it comes to determining where the maritime border north of alaska runs....

No surpirse, its thought to be an oil rich area.

If Canada really is so dependent on the USA why does it not just give up the pretence of independence and seek politican union?

By the way, isn't it time for the return of Mr Harper next week ? He seems to have been quiet - any suprises in store?

In theory Canada is vast and could over time possibly isolate its self, but for the next generation and maybe further, its better to think in macro economic terms of North America with two regional governments than trying to think of us in isolation
I think that Canada are not allowed to isolate themselves in terms of oil supply, under the treaty canada has to supply US with something like a minimum of 60% of the average of the last three years supply. If canada fail to do that on grounds of environmental protest then the US military are allowed to come in to protect the supply.

The first bit I got from Stupid till the last drop and my friend is reading 'Tarsands'. The second bit comes from the book 'tar sands' read by my friend who is in the naval reserve. HE was slightly shocked by it.

We can only thank the big man for the opportunity to watch the pinnacle of worlds sports before our demise into purgatory. Will this happen at the closing ceremony? Quite a fitting ending i would say.
