How easy is it to get a bus driving jobs in Canada and what are the wages like

What bus cponies are there in alberta

Hi, and welcome to BE.

Do you already have a visa/work authorisation? Or will you need an employer prepared to go to the hassle and cost of sponsoring you? I'd imagine the answer to your 'how easy is it' will depend on that!

Wages wise, it would appear it would be around $20ph as a rough guide - https://www.jobbank.gc.ca/LMI_report...ortOption=wage

BC Transit, Vancouver .........

Note that you have to be Permanent Resident or a Canadian Citizen plus be legally entitled to work in Canada.

I think you might well find that ALL companies have similar residency requirements

Conventional Bus Operators

Conventional Bus Operators move over 800,000 passengers throughout Metro Vancouver every day.
You don't need a Commercial Driver's Licence to apply. We do require that you have a valid Class 5 (or higher) BC Driver's Licence or Canadian equivalent.
You'll obtain a Class 2 BC Commercial Learner's Licence with the air brake endorsement during training.
A Conventional Bus Operator is a full-time position, with a guaranteed 37.5 hours per week. We offer competitive wages and benefits, opportunity for advancement, and paid training.
Conventional Bus Operators must be available to work various shifts
  • Early straight shifts: May start as early as 4:30 a.m. and finish around noon.
  • Mid runs: Start approximately mid-day and finishes early in the evening.
  • Owls: Start late in the evening and may finish in the early hours of the following day.
  • Split Shifts: Start in the morning for 4 hours, break, then 4 additional hours in the evening.

Community Shuttle Operators

As a Community Shuttle Operator, you'll drive a smaller 24-passenger vehicle throughout the local communities of the Metro Vancouver. This position is fantasic opportunity for:
  • Individuals who enjoy working with the public.
  • Those looking for flexible schedules.
  • Students going to school and looking for a flexible well-paying job.
  • People working part-time and wanting more hours.
  • Retired individuals wanting to re-enter the workforce or supplement income.
You don't need a Commercial Driver's Licence to apply. Community Shuttle Operators will obtain a Class 4 Unrestricted BC Commercial Learner's Licence.
Community Shuttle Operators start as casual and work on an as-needed basis. However, once in the department, you may submit your intent to move into a part-time (20 to 30 hours per week) or full-time (minimum 35 hours per week) position. You may also request additional hours if you sign up to drive for vacationing, sick, or unavailable drivers. Community Shuttle Driver training is also paid training.
Both Conventional Bus and Community Shuttle Operators are represented by Unifor Local 111.


Qualifications

In order to qualify to become a Conventional Bus or Community Shuttle Operator, you must be:
  • A Canadian citizen or a Permanent Resident.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Able to understand, speak, read, and write English in order to learn the training materials, communicate effectively with customers, and write reports on incidents involving safety.
  • Willing to work various types of shifts.
  • Able to pass a medical examination.
  • Acceptable attendance record at work (absenteeism/lateness).
  • Basic computer and internet literacy in order to complete the mandatory training component.

Driving Record Requirements

You must demonstrate a safe driving history. Your driving record over the past 5 years will be reviewed as part of the application process.
To qualify for consideration, you must:
  • Hold a Class 5 (or higher) BC Driver's Licence or Canadian equivalent.
  • Be able to obtain a Class 2 BC Commercial Learner's Licence with air brake endorsement for Conventional Bus Operator.
  • Be able to obtain a Class 4 unrestricted BC Commercial Learner's Licence for Community Shuttle Operator.
  • No more than 1 violation in the past 3 years. Maximum points on the 1 violation can be no more than 3 points. This includes non-moving violations.
  • No roadside suspensions or driving prohibitions in the past 5 years.
  • No more than 1 at-fault accident in the past 3 years.
  • If you already have 1 at-fault accident when you apply and you receive either an additional at-fault accident or an outstanding accident during the recruitment process, your application will no longer be considered.
Your driving record, in Canada or out of country, over the past 5 years will be reviewed as part of the application process. You must demonstrate a safe driving history in order to qualify for any position that involves the operation of a company vehicle.
Even if you're able to meet the minimum requirements, an excessive number of violations, prohibitions, suspensions, and/or accidents in the past may exclude you from consideration.

Applications with a Criminal Record

We accept applications from persons with a criminal record. The Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Search includes, but is not limited to, the following areas:
  • Offences related to drugs or alcohol
  • Offences related to physical and/or sexual abuse
  • Offences related to violence or the threat of violence, including physical assault
  • Offences related to theft or fraud
  • Any other offences not mentioned above
Information received regarding criminal records is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

To find information on Alberta .......... google Alberta Transit, or (city) transit .. each city runs its own transit services
