At the moment your government pension will be frozen from the day you leave and NOT be indexed linked

We are not sure if we should keep paying minimum NI contributions or not. What are the pros and cons

Yes that is true.

My aunt has been in Canada for 30 years and has applied to claim a UK pension.

Just tell him to write to Newcastle upon tyne with his National Insurance number or if he doesnt know that where and when he worked in the UK last and paid contributions and the Pensions service will be able to trace his contributions.

The Pension Service here in the UK pay your UK pension if any is due directly into your Canadian Bank Account and depending how much the pension is it is paid either monthly or yearly.

The UK cannot tax you on it as if you are living in Canada you are classed as Non Resident through the UK tax system. However, you would have to declare this income on your Canadian Taxes and then it would be taxed as Foreign Income by the Tax people.

Not too sure what you mean about moving money if you want to elaborate

Try going to the website : www.britishpensions .com . This is the site of the Canadian Alliance of British Pensioners and you will find answers to all of your pension queries, like obtaining your full pension when on holiday in the UK or how to get the maximum pension when you reach retirement age even though it is frozen. We are spearheading the fight to get the same pension as the UK pensioners with yearly upgrades. Our case is to be heard at the European Court of Humnan Rights in Strasbourg. Join and get your name on the list that is to be presented to the court. There is a wealth of knowledge here.

Actually the UK can (and does) tax UK source income paid to non-residents. However, usually the personal allowance covers any UK taxable income. To the extent that it does not, the lower rate tax bands generally ensure that UK tax is less than Canadian tax (and normally you pay Canadian tax with credit for UK tax).
