In the last decade of going on holiday to various parts of Canada, we have found the cheaper times for flights and accommodation to be January to March and October to early December. However, the weather won't be great (unless you want to ski!) and you will probably find that a lot of the tourist attractions are closed at that time of year. On the plus side, if you can handle it in winter then the summers should be a breeze!

We visited Nova Scotia about three years ago in later November/early December. It was quite chilly and pretty wet and windy, but we managed to get around with no hassles and often we could just turn up at hotels or B&Bs in some places without booking to get a reasonable rate.

The next cheapest times to go would probably be April, May and possibly June and also September.

July and August will be pricey.

Hope this helps!
Cheers
Flossie

hi,

the start and the end of the tourist season i would say is best (may through til end october). some tourist things close down (like the harbour hopper in halifax for example and the tours of the citadel arent on) but other things still go one, like museusm etc. i would say its worth coming here when the tourist season is still on as there is a great buzz about the place. depending on where you plan on going also, some b& b's may shut down out of season. we got a good rate when we first came over in march.

try the budget airlines but sometimes air canada is about the same price depending on time of year.

have a nice holiday!

You can save alot depending on what day you travel.

Also, when you are planning to book your flights just keep checking every day on sites such as www.flyzoom.com and www.airtransat.co.uk

I recently booked flights for October and the outgoing flight was about £53 one day, it dropped to just £13 for a few days and then went back up again. Seems like they just have the occasional offers on.

You can also try Canadian Affair for cheap flights. Both Canadian Affair and Zoom Airlines don't fly after October and start up again in May.

Winter months are long here so be prepared for freezing temps right up until April/early May. In February/March it went down as far as -29C but with lovely blue skies and sunshine most days.

Autumn is supposed to be really nice here. We came over for a quick visit early last September with Zoom Airlines and the weather was nice then.

So, you get a cheap air fare, the city is closed because of a major snow storm and all highways are out are blocked.

May or September, after those months you can't rely upon the weather.

Respect the weather, people die in major ice or snow storms, this ain't the UK.

Seems like most of the low cost airlines (Zoom, Globespan etc) only operate during peak season (May - Oct) so during the winter often means your only choice is Air canada scheduled service (which can be more expensive). Accommodation (like self catering cottages) can be really cheap out of season though.

If its a recky visit though, the other thing to consider is what you're going to get out of it. If part of the plan is to convince your OH that NS is a great place, come in the summer or better still the Fall (September or Oct) when its still warm but not humid and really beautiful. On the other hand, if you really want to see if you could cope with the winters here, try coming in February. thats about as cold as it gets so if you can handle February weather then you know you have nothing to worry about. My personal favouraite time of year here is September. Schools have gone back here so its not too busy but its still in-season so places are still open. Temps in mid 20s and sunny.
