We moved out over 4 years ago. Edmonton first, then Regina and now Calgary.
While in Regina, we bought a house in Moose Jaw, the friendly city. I cut my grass twice last year as the neighbours cut it the rest of the time. And I cleared the drive once from snow, again the neighbours did it! When we moved over, I was the only wage earner and I didn't take home much more than you quoted. We bought a house, new cars, went camping in the Rockies, bbq'd 12 moths of the year (at -30 that's quite the experience!). Although we did well from the sale of our house in the uk, your money will go further here. I will say that while the people of Regina and Moose Jaw are fantastic, there isn't enough to do round about. It's as flat as you can imagine, fields and fields and fields of crops. We moved there with a purpose, and if you're capable of using it as a springboard to get to a bigger centre by burying your head for a while - its worth it. What we experienced in Saskatchewan isn't representative of the rest of the country, Regina is a booming market at the minute, you won't have a problem getting a job - might not be in the field you practice in but it'll allow you settle in Good luck with your decision! Well 2eyedjack, what a lovely message glad has all worked out for you :) Totally agree with you, which funny enough said to my husband that we will out grow Regina as fairly small although seems to be buzzing with the industry out there at the moment. Guess its a starting block and who knows really we might land up staying there, see what happens. I went to Moose Jaw too and to be honest before went out there was a place I thought I could consider to live, but really changed my mind when got out there, didn't really think it was for me. I think we'll be staying in Regina for a while to be honest. Although went to Lumsden and Regina beach and loved the feel of both of them just not much there either, but a nice feel about the place. Guess so much depends on things, like if I learn to drive, what job I get etc etc, but happy to live in house hubby has found as close to amenities and I have already met a few of the neighbours who although most retired very nice people. One thing I do say that is when shopping found everyone so helpful which you so do not find in London, would be a chore for someone to help you out these days without a huff and a puff! Although this could be that I was just having a good experience in Canada lol Well hoping that i'll be out there soon permanently to experience things and see where we go from there. Still awaiting exchange on contracts on house then it should be all systems go to pack my bags and be off! Thank you for your comments were very useful and do agree we could out grow Regina, see what happens. On to the next chapter of my life shortly, I hope :) |

Have you managed to take a trip to Saskatoon yet? We can't wait to get there...
My brother in law enjoyed his time there, I think it was tough being on his own though and he moved back to the uk at the end of his contract. It's slightly bigger than Regina but still has a small town feel. Like the rest of Saskatchewan it gets extremes of temperatures, -50 with wind chill in the winter to +40 in the summer |

While we were in Moose Jaw my brother in law took a one year contract in Saskatoon, so we won't up a couple of times. Didnt get to see much of it as we were just there for the day, and apart from driving through it a couple of times that's the height of my experience!

Looks like we will be heading in at the deep end so to speak as we will more than likely be moving over in November  :D it cannot come quick enough for us :) We've also been to Regina, Prince Albert National Park, and driven through MooseJaw. I wan't to go to the tunnels in Moosejaw once we're settled over there. Been to different places in which the names I can't pronounce and still there is loads left to see no doubt. Can't wait to go to various lakes in the summer and just blend into the lifestyle there.. We have lots of friends over there so we are lucky in that respect. |

Saskatoon is bigger than Regina, not that much bigger though. We only went on a night run there so difficult to tell what it is like and guess it depends on what people are looking for. The out skirts of the town seemed nice with apartment and houses on lake/river - not sure which it was, although my husband said he didn't think it would be for us as preferring the small town at the moment and quiet life. Although as said above each place is different and depends what people are looking for. Regina for me is a start as small town but enough to do there for a while, but do think we will out grow it. Although Regina has become very expensive, as was talking to a Canadian and he said one or two years ago the house we're going to be living in to buy were going for third the price! So this may mean for us we might need to move further out to be able to get a slightly bigger house, but we're open to options. I guess it is what you make of it and how your perception of things is, we're there with open mind and looking at all options. I hope you find Saskatoon nice, it might not be for everyone but sure if your going with open mind it'll be ok. Good luck ! |

I keep getting told about the winters, although met few Canadian's out there when out there in September and they said the weather was milder last year. Although that doesn't mean it was not cold, he said they had more problems with fog than anything else, which was apparently unusual. Ok, so they still had the wind chill and lots of snow, but guess its not even something you get used to you just deal with. I'm a really cold person so sure my hot water bottle and thermals will come in very handy! I guess UK weather is very different, damp, wet, cold and can be windy too but sure not as cold or windy as Regina, but think they are slightly more equipped for the weather in Canada and know where our house is the roads get cleared as included in our rent. Hopefully we can all keep in touch and share our experiences in Canada in -30/-40/-50 weather conditions and hopefully we'll survive the first winter  |
