Meet ups in Calgary
Hey everyone
I just wondered whether you guys ever arrange to meet up?
One of my worries about emigrating is not having friends. I am not worried about missing my family that much but I do have an amazing bunch of friends over here. I know friends aren't built in a day but emigrating with a husband that works long hours and a child who will be at school all day does make me a bit worried that I will be very lonely.
I'm easygoing etc so always make friends easily so I should stop worrying really!

There's a thread about it under "The Maple Leaf". 8% of the population of Alberta is British (or British citizens at least) and in Calgary it's something like 10% so I wouldn't get too worried about it.

Re: Meet ups in Calgary
Hi there. There was a thread on here recently about some members meeting up in the SE (I think) of Calgary.
We live just outside Calgary and moved here just over two and a half years ago and we have managed to make many friends, many quite early on too. There is a large population of Brits over here. We found it easier to make friends with fellow Brits. I think this is because we are all in the similar position of starting afresh in a new life without the support of family and old friends so we're kind of "there for each other". We do have a fair number of Canadian friends too but most good friendships are built up over time.
Like me, you will probably get to meet and make friends through your children's activities, whether it be school, or clubs and sports etc. We're lucky that some of our neighbours have become friends too who we now socialise with as well.
I wouldn't worry too much about making friends over here, particularly if you are a friendly outgoing person. Friendships will happen!
All the best!

Re: Meet ups in Calgary
We recently met a lovely family who moved over and now consider them good friends.
And last weekend Allys and her lovely hubby came for a BBQ!
You can definately count on us to invite you over for a cuppa and a chit chat!
When do you guys arrive?

That sounds fab!
Well hubby is having a second interview for a job but we have to sell our house first as we need the equity in it so we are stuck until we can sell. I think the house will be the sticking point - not the getting the job bit!
Keep the kettle boiling (do they even "do" kettles out there?) and I'll be over with a packet of biccies as soon as I can!

If you have a young child at school, then pick an area with its own school, where parents drop off and pick up rather than get bussed. We met most of our friends through this.

Yup, just make sure you pay a few bucks more for one that switches off when it boils! Not so much into safety here, so the thing will just keep on boiling until its dry otherwise!!LOL

Hi,
We are due to move from Newcastle to Calgary in the next six weeks and so if you want to meet up for a cuppa or if you truly are a Geordie lass - a few bevies, give me a shout.
I will let you know how we get on!
