Default Medical insurance?

I've been in Canada on a work permit for a couple of months. I posted a question a while ago about the high taxes and what we got in return. I got many replies that we got medical insurance in return. When I asked my colleagues, they told me that I had to pay to get medical insurance separately and that medical insurance is not included in the income taxes.

I'm confused, could anyone please explain how does it really work? Do I have to apply for medical insurance? If so, how? and what is the SSN good for? Please advice.

Thank you.

It depends upon where you are. Some provinces have a separate fee for medical insurance and others simply roll it into income taxes. In any case it is cheap.

There is a separate fee in BC - about $54 for a single person, $96 for a couple etc.
