At least there is a proper UK welfare state so most people will survive this recession.

What if those new to Canada cannot find jobs, are they entightled to claim benefits to pay their housing and living cost through difficult times ?
Good points!

My lad got them to give him a 6 month contract and I insisted he get return tickets (cheaper than one way) and his flat is month by month.

If push comes to shove he could sign up for the Canadian army

How long do they have to be a Canadian resident before they would be entightled to this ? What about medical and dentistry etc, would they be entightled to free treatment or would they have to wait until they had contributed enough national insurance payments ?

It depends on the province. In Ontario medical care is free after three months, I don't think dental ever is. I don't know that one could qualify for (un)employment insurance payments without ever working.

A lot of things in the UK is taken for granted, for instance a couple of years ago I had some private dentistry done, it was not much work but the bill cost me over 500 pounds, that would be over $1000 canadian. For someone who is not working they would have this same treatment free under the NHS.

people who pay mortgages can claim relief on their interest payments after nine months out of work and those who rent can claim their rent payments immediately after losing their jobs. They also recieve unemployment or job seekers allowance. The goverment will even give you an allowance to train and get new skills to get you back into a job.

Its only when a lot of people live in other countries when they realise how accomodating the UK is.

Please, no more Brits.

They add nothing to the cultural landscape whatsoever.

Aside from the odd Pub.
