Markham

Re: Markham
Like any "where to live" thread on here, it's a bit of "how long is a piece of string". How long do you want to commute? That will really answer it...

Re
Thanks for replies, suppose I should have asked for recommendations instead. What areas close to Markham are popular and why? Areas to avoid? TIA

Re: Markham
Again... how long is a piece of string. What are you looking for? If you want a detached house, then avoid downtown. If you want a hopping/trendy nightlife, then avoid the suburbs. You really need to give us more information about what you are looking for. Again the question of how long of a commute you are willing to drive as well will help narrow things down.
Details, please!

Re: Markham
Markham is northern Scarborough so I expect lots of people commute from central Scarborough; some of Scarborough is very nice and very expensive. Tuxedo Court is not, I suggest not living in or around Tuxedo Court. The metro housing buildings at Morningside and Lawrence are also a bit shit, don't go there.

Re: Markham
I used to work in Markham and live in that nice bit of Scarboro that DBD mentioned.
It's very drivable (against traffic) for the hip downtown youth brigade.
And pretty good for Newmarket/ Aurora for the more countrified set with kids.
Another guy who liked spending money on 407 tolls lived in Burlinton.
Markham itself is a heavily asian (in the canadian sense- far east rather than sub continent) dormitory suburb which is bizarrely overpriced imho. The old Markham village area/ unionville is OK but even more insanely priced.

I recall eating somewhere in Unionville a few years ago while ona business visit to Markham. The Heritage Conservation District struck me as twee'est of twee places in the world.

Re: Markham
I live in Brooklin, just north of Whitby. Lots of people here commute to Markham along Highway 7 or the 407 - 20-30 minutes plus depending on traffic and where in Markham you're going.

Re: Markham
Thanks for reply. Looking at under an hour commute, if that's possible ;-), semi-rural/suburbs or outskirts of city, not that fussy but don't want city centre. Stores and cinema within short drive. Decent rental properties as possibly going to rent instead of buy as not planning on staying long term.
TIA

Re: Markham
Most places within 30 mins of Markham are ok
Places to avoid would be anywhere around morningside and Ellesmere/Kingston Road (I know I lived there for 3 years) and a few buildings and town homes near Shepherd and Neilson, malvern area.

You have to do pretty well to find a rough area anywhere in the GTA, MagnumPI has picked out a couple. Richmnd Hill is one of the most mad expensive places on the planet.
Note you'll have to drive unless you're close enough for bus; the GO train only goes into Toronto in the morning then out in the evening.
Get a years rental somewhere bearable (and within that one hour) then work stuff out, find a more permanent place?
