We have our papers in for skilled worker application which could take a further two and a half years. We are visiting in May and making plans to meet employers, employment agencies. We do not have work permits yet, don't know how to obtain one so info would be usefull. I would like to know if any one has had problems with age, I am 56 this year, is that a dissadvantage to jobs? What are the dissability rights in Canada, I have read some articles that do not make it a very popuar subject, any comments?
The other option we were considering is a student visa that I understand allows the spouse to obtain a work permit to work in any area, is this correct?
Look forward to some information.
Regards
Tom

If you have a read of the Wiki (on blue bar at top of page) then it will explain Temp Work Permits (TWP) and Study Permits in detail to you. You are correct though, in that a Study Permit will entitle your spouse to get an open work permit - but you yourself would be restricted to working a certain number of hours on campus so could not earn a proper living.
To get a TWP you would need to find a job first and your potential employer would also need to get something called a LMO - basically proof that they have advertised the job across Canada and been unable to find a Canadian willing, or able, to do the job. The TWP would be for that specific job and wouldn't be an open permit, although it would again mean your spouse could get an open work permit.
When did you put your SW application in? It may not be as long as 2.5 years to wait as they are being processed much quicker now since the process changed.
Also, do look in the Wiki for an article called 'Scouting Trip' (just put it into the search box) as it'll give you lots of good tips for your trip over in May.
Good luck.

Hey Tom
We are moving to Halifax in August. We applied for PR Feb 08, but we are going over on my Student Visa. I am currently at college here in the UK and applied at a college in Halifax which was accepted. We are all going over on the Student Visa route (me hubby & 2 kids). We are visiting in April to look at houses, schools, jobs for the hubby. If you need any info pm me.
