Basically it's a fried bit of dough with filling (Potato, cheese, meat etc...) common among Polish and Ukranian folk. Yummmmmmmmy!
My ex-boss used to bring home made ones from his mother to the office and we all fought over them... I have the fork marks on the backs of my hands to prove it!!

It's a filled potato dumpling - imagine large tortellini made with potato pasta and filled with potatoes & cheese, ham or onions. You boil them, then fry them - traditionally they're served with sour cream, I like them with HP sauce or chilli sauce.

Have a look for them in the freezer section of any large Canadian supermarket, they're awesome.

Some people make their own and have perogie making days to fill the freezer with them.

I take it you are still in the UK? I dont remember ever seeing them there, but someone will no doubt correct me if they have appeared since I left.

They are good. We have them with red pepper spagetti sauce, or a cheese sauce, or both.

Perogies are definitely something I would miss if I went back to the UK.

Ginger beef is another - I don't remember seeing that in the UK either?

Yes, I am indeed still in the UK. Perogies sound delicious - I shall have to try them out when I get there!

Never heard of ginger beef, either. A daft question, perhaps, but is it beef with ginger? I adore anything with ginger (the real stuff, not the sickly sweet muck) so something else to look forward to!
:)

Ginger beef is strips of beef in batter with a sweet ginger sauce.

If you ever make it to Calgary, head to Sangapore Sam's - they do a nice buffet.

Is this invention before or after you corner the market on belly button lint - McFluff, with "at no extra charge" included is a sterilized paper clip and extra lint for any mistakes!!!!!

Actually, a deep fried mars bar......I would buy anytime....after Cadbury Hazelnut choco bar of course......but make sure you get the UK version of the Mars bar.....again NA is junk compared to the UK!!!!!

You could deep fry it....cut it up and put it on a stick, then throw it in the freezer - then when people buy it they can eat it without getting their hands messy......remember I want a "cut" of the profits if you use my idea!!!!!

Don't listen to these guys.....their not even polish....the perogies in the stores are ok......but you want to try the real thing.....like my grandmother use to make......if you're going to try perogies.....try to get them from a Polish deli - - gosh we even have a Polish deli in Victoria. Eating them with sour cream is the best way for pure lust and enjoyment.

And don't forget the often forgotten cabbage roll. Steamed cabbage leaves stuffed with rice and ground meat, rolled up and baked or whatever - absolutely delicious

M&M meat shops sell a mean cabbage roll. Drooling now thinking about it:) Unfortunatley I dont have a polish granny, and cant afford to buy from the deli, so I will have to put up with store bought ones:( Theyre not that bad, seems to be more a factor of how well you cook and fry them than anything else, but then I never have been too fussy about food.

Perogies:

Saw then in Asda last year, note they have been taken over by wal-mart now for a while, so a lot of stuff have been crossing the pond. At least it was in my local one when we were there.

Love em too, with noodles and spaghetti !

Boy, my jokes are really going over like a "lead balloon". First the "I'll bite" bombed and now the joke about the perogies. You're right of course, perogies homemade at a deli are very pricey. We only buy them for a very special treat. I just thought a first experience should be the very best!

M&Ms' do make delicious cabbage rolls (wish I could remember the polish name) - now that you have reminded me I think I'll get some for dinner this weekend.

One of my regrets as a kid was not taking the opportunity to learn polish and to make cabbage rolls and perogies when I lived so close to my grandparents in Winnipeg. But as a kid - I had other "far more important" things to do".....
