We hope to land in Vancouver this summer and stay for a couple of weeks. Come back to the UK for 5 months before settling back in Vancouver permanently. If we did it this way, how would we receive our PR card? Would it be waiting for us when we arrive back 5 months later or could it be sent to the UK?

1. It takes 30 days to process plus mailing, and will only be mailed to a Canadian residential address.
2. Give a friends or relatives address in Canada, and they can forward it to you. If you don't have an address, you have 180 days to inform CIC.

We did exactly this in April of this year. Before we went, I set up a mailbox with a company called Accutype. They are based on Marine Drive, North Vancouver. Link is http://www.accutype.net. I think it cost about $75. I used the mailing address they created for me to give to Immigration and our PR cards were sent there. Accutype then mailed them to us in the UK. Altogether, from landing to receiving our PR cards in the UK took 6 weeks. Accutype mail everything on a Thursday regardless of when they receive it. We received the PR cards the following Tuesday. It took about 5 weeks for the PR Cards to come through to our Canadian mailbox though, so slightly longer than the published time. We found it worked well for us as we didn't know anyone in Canada that could have received them for us and posted them on.

Dont you have to collect your PR card in person, and show ID.

I only say this because that is exactly what my OH had to do.

No, my husband landed in December, and we gave them my relatives address and mid to late January they received his card which they subsequently forwarded to us in the UK. No problem.

You could also get it sent to your friendly realtor for nothing!

People who apply for PR cards as part of the landing process have them sent by mail, everyone else needs to pick up in person.

That explains it then. OH already landed for many years.

Any particular reason why he's not a Canadian citizen, would solve the PR Card hassle?

Apparently he can't apply for citizenship as we have been out of Canada for too long, (5 years) only managed to get PR card coz he was accompany me, and time outside Canada accompanying a Canadian citizen is classed as time in Canada, although can't use this rule for applying for citizenship.

Where did you find out about this "time outside Canda accompanying a Canadian citizen" business?

I'm Canadian. My British husband did have landed status but we moved to UK before he took citizenship. Been here 12 years. We've been told that he has to reapply for PR/landed status. If there was a way around this, I'd love to know about it.

I called London and they told us he would need to apply for a one time travel document, which we did. (for what it is worth when he went to Canada with this stamped in his passport he was told that he didn't need it and immigration crossed it out)

I also had them send me the application for the PR card, one of the questions asks how long you have been outside Canada, and further down it asks if you have been accompanying a Canadian Citizen, it then stated that this time will actually count as time in Canada.

Thanks a million. We are in the middle of going down the whole reapplying route. Husband goes for his medical tomorrow. We could save a bundle if this returning PR thing works instead. I think we better call London. We've been here 12 years but back to Canada several times since. Hmmm..
